We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Rodriguez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.
Hi Jasmine, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew entertainment is meant for me is when my mom was coming home from work one night and saw me with a skirt, some panty hose, and a red spaghetti strap watching the big TV emulating Beyoncé’s concert. I couldn’t have been more than five years old. After that I began writing poetry, joining choirs, and even recorded my first song in a recording studio. It’s been noticed that I really just become a different version of myself when I get on stage, it really takes people aback. I’ve always loved dance, film, singing, and overall having an outlet to express myself.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first got into my industry by joining a chorus and growing with them for two years, then I started working with a group of artists where I was able to record music and travel doing my shows. My parents really knew more than I did and always made sure my name and art were protected at such a young age. I’m grateful for that. I would travel to different states and while we were there, I sold CD’s to people. My favorite state doing that had to be Atlanta so far, I remember one dude was not trying to buy my CD because he didn’t listen to “west coast music”, made me rap something on the spot and.. he ended up buying a CD. What really sets me apart is that I don’t have an interest in following the most recent trend, I like to be who I am and others catch on. That’s my favorite thing to watch. Not only am I an artist, the business savvy persona I get from my mom plays a huge role.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I do believe that some people do not understand my mind. I usually have a different perspective than others and it actually makes me realize that there is only one way to make others understand. Or try to at least.. and that’s through what I love to do and who I am. Not holding back from others or afraid of what people may think because we are all different for a reason.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
What I believe society can do to best support artists is to get the understanding that if we all support one another, it probably would be easier to grow as a community and live essentially.
