We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
In the Fall of 2023, I had the opportunity to set a new creation for an Advanced Composition show at the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. I choreographed a piece on myself and several of my female-identifying colleagues regarding the complexities of female intimacy and sexuality. I wanted to open dialogue between the dancers and the audience regarding how the nature of the woman’s body is still seen as a ‘site of power’. This piece was so incredibly meaningful to me, as having the privilege to choreograph on such talented and inspiring women, was so fulfilling. I wanted to showcase feminine energy in a way that feels raw, authentic, and visceral, and being able to facilitate a space for women to physicalize and embody their intimate experiences was the most rewarding process I’ve ever been a part of. I am truly grateful I was able to create and present a work that was able to honor that of a ‘woman’ in its fullness.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As an artist, I see dance as a way to connect with the spiritual essence of art. For me, movement serves as a powerful tool for increasing and elevating one’s consciousness. My artistic endeavors are an extension of the Self, as dance is life in demonstration, and in that, I aim to challenge my ways of thinking and processing my emotions through ‘the work’, and am interested in the dialogue between movement and self-discovery. Additionally, I am fascinated by the intersection of dance, psychology, and neuroscience, exploring how a nuanced understanding of the brain and nervous system can enrich and inform our movement, providing insight into the interplay between dance and sensation. Through this fusion, I hope to continue unraveling the connection between the mind and body, creating a dance experience that transcends physicality and delves into the realms of emotional and cognitive exploration.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my freshman year of college, I faced significant challenges that cast doubt on my ability to persist as both an artist and an individual. Amidst questioning my identity and place in dance, and feeling stifled by my surroundings, I struggled to maintain my creative spirit. Despite these adversities, this period became a trial to my resilience, illuminating my unwavering dedication to my craft. Navigating through this trying time really reaffirmed my artistic purpose, and solidified that my true essence lies in the creation and pursuit of artistic expression. This moment in my journey served as a testament to my unyielding passion and perseverance.
