We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Roberts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
This story marks a turning point in my career, a pivotal moment that set me on a new path in the business world. After relocating to Atlanta, I was determined to never work for another company again, having spent many years as a superintendent for a construction company in Phoenix, Arizona. I was ready to dedicate all the energy and expertise I had previously given to that company to my own endeavors.
Eager to find opportunities in the trades I was most familiar with, such as painting and drywall, I turned to Craigslist to see if there were any jobs available in the Atlanta area that matched my skills. That’s when I stumbled upon a listing from a homeowner in Roswell who was looking for painters to work on his home. I arrived with a small team, only to find that the homeowner had already hired several painters to tackle different areas of the house.
As we were directed to our assigned tasks, I couldn’t help but notice that the other painters were not delivering the quality of work I was accustomed to. Despite this, I focused on doing the best job I could. Throughout the day, the homeowner observed my work and eventually approached me, remarking on my skill and suggesting that I should come work for him. Unaware of his professional background, I politely declined, expressing my commitment to working independently.
Intrigued, the homeowner asked me about my work history, and as I described my experience with skyscraper renovations, he seemed puzzled. He questioned why someone with my background would be searching for work on Craigslist, stating that nothing good is typically found there. I retorted, “Well, I found you, and you found me,” which elicited a laugh from him before he walked away.
After completing the job and receiving payment, I thought that was the end of our interaction. However, a week later, I received a call from a company looking to speak with me. To my surprise, it was the homeowner’s company, a leading firm responsible for building facades on skyscrapers and buildings across the United States. They wanted to hire me to restore a major landmark in Atlanta’s Metropolitan Area.
This unexpected opportunity marked a significant shift in my career trajectory, opening doors to new and exciting possibilities. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most impactful opportunities can arise from unexpected places.
Jasmine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
MOOD 6 RENOVATIONS AND INTERIOR DESIGN LLC is a construction and design company.
Since mood is most accurately described as a quality of feeling at a particular time, it can be assumed that a mood is subject to temporal influences of any and many forms of environment, both tangible and intangible, one equally affecting the other. Knowing this gives us access to the intentional manipulation of environments to exact upon them selective elements to influence any desired mood.
At Mood 6 we consider six principles in our approach to any renovation project. They are Design, Aesthetics, Environmental Sustainability, Safety, Speed, and Economy. Likewise, in designing we consider six principles to bring harmony between your environments. They are Balance, Scale and Proportion, Rythm and Repetition, Emphasis, Unity, and Contrast.
Our philosophy is that just as one’s physical body is a spiritual temple, so one’s physical home should be a spiritual sanctuary.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the construction industry, it is crucial to differentiate the services you offer. At the start of my career, I provided typical contractor services and found myself in fierce competition. However, I soon realized that the construction aspect of contracting was lacking something important: design. I’m not referring to interior design with furniture decor, but rather what I call construction design. This involves providing blueprint renderings, planning consultation, and selection of home furnishings, such as tile, grout, fixtures, appliances, lighting, flooring, countertops, backsplash, and more. This is distinct from interior design decor services, which focus on space and layout planning, consultation, and selection of home furniture and decoration. I discovered that many clients required assistance with the selection process, yet most construction firms only provided labor services without offering design support. This left clients feeling overwhelmed by difficult choices and uncertain about whether their selections would create a cozy and cohesive space.
Many business and property owners often hire a contractor but then need to engage an architect and an interior designer to create a design for their projects. However, these outsourced designers often fail to customize the design to fit the client’s mood, function, and style. Recognizing this gap in the market, I made the strategic decision for my construction company, Mood 6, to not only compete but to dominate by offering both construction and design services in one place. This shift allowed us to streamline the renovation and new construction process, providing our clients with a convenient “one-stop shop” for all their needs. Our focus on curating designs that align with our clients’ individual styles, rather than simply following trends, has been a game changer. This transformation into a Construction Design Company that offers both labor services and design has been a pivotal moment for my company.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that two key factors have contributed to building my reputation within my market. Firstly, as a female general contractor, I approach all construction projects with a focus on design principles. Unlike many contractors who expect owners to have a clear vision of what they want, I understand that clients often seek to recreate a specific mood or experience they have encountered elsewhere, such as at a resort, hotel, spa, or in a magazine or online. At Mood 6, we specialize in helping clients curate the mood they desire, providing visual representations through 2D/3D renderings before executing the plan.
The second factor that has helped establish my reputation is reliability and communication. Unfortunately, contractors are often known for being unreliable and difficult to communicate with, causing stress and concern for clients who have invested deposits. Recognizing that construction is already a stressful journey, I prioritize clear and consistent communication to alleviate any additional worries for my clients. At Mood 6, we make ourselves accessible to our clients, promptly addressing their questions and concerns. We ensure that our clients never have to wonder about our reliability, communicating our schedule in advance and promptly informing them of any unexpected changes. Our goal is to minimize the stress our clients experience during the transition of their spaces, providing them with a sense of security and importance throughout the process.
