We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Puga. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.
Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
One of the most important lessons that I had to learn and had to unravel through was that I was failing to appreciate my own significance and undervaluing my skills and talents as a makeup artist. Fear is the most self-destructive emotion anyone could ever possess, it’s untrue and unrealistic. Discovering your true self worth will change your destiny. Things that you used to tolerate suddenly dissolve and you will proceed to climb new heights and levels of success. I became complacent at my prior job, I was too afraid of failing myself, so I stayed, and that was such a loss on my part. Underestimating yourself should be a crime because it is unjust to yourself and to your journey. This will delay you from accomplishing what you are really set out to be in life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the proud owner of, MUA Jasmine. I am both the artist and creative executive behind my makeup business that was established more than a decade ago.
Being a self-taught makeup artist, I have dedicated my whole life into makeup artistry and the industry. Makeup is so special to me as it is a representation of my youth and my inner child. When I was just a few years old, I felt an unbreakable attraction with makeup. I always wanted to have lipstick on and dabbled into my mothers liquid foundation, ultimately creating a mess of a disaster for her to clean. I remember grabbing my mother’s orange makeup case that she thrifted and secretly taking it into my room just to play. Dusting the shimmery Revlon eyeshadow over my eye-lids. It all just seemed right. It was apparent that I became fascinated with cosmetics. Overtime I developed a great skill along with the passion for it. Within a few years I was a Beauty Advisor for Lancôme and later became a Certified Makeup Artist through the brand MAC Cosmetics, my childhood dream!
I felt that my love for makeup and my creative pursuit, aligned for me to infuse it into my own personal MUA Jasmine business! I chose the name MUA (makeup artist) Jasmine for the simplicity of it, my name with my service. I wanted to create a business designed for people to have a sense of self care when using my makeup services. My hope is for my clients to feel amazing about their time spent with me applying their makeup and for them to take away so much inspiration and self love. Makeup is not only about the glamour, it’s about the power you hold while wearing it. Doing what I love brings up so much high spirits in me because I am living in my destiny. If I were doing anything else I don’t know if ide be quite this content.
Makeup Artistry is so valuable to me because It allows me to discover the deeper connection behind my clients intentions for their makeup look. I like to take my time and investigate my clients truest makeup desires, with it being a trend or just something out of their imagination, it will come to life. This is my bridal specialty, women have coveted bridal makeup imagery since they were young girls, a connection that they have had with their inner feminine projection, it is sacred. They should be honored with wondrous makeup service and dedicated time, it is their moment to shine and bring into fruition the dream they once envisioned with breath taking results. I believe that everyday is a celebration of life and for each waking day we get another chance to live it to our highest potential. This is why my clients really make my business successful, they are the people who are celebrating their milestones, it being special birthday celebrations, maternity portraits, prom and wedding photographs. We are always celebrating ourselves. Other ways that clients use my makeup services is for self marketing, such as real estate license pictures, business cards and advertisements of their own growing companies. In my business I always make sure to stay adaptable to change. When we welcome change we open up the doors to more possibilities for us to handle whatever situation we find ourselves in.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I would recommend several resources to enhance entrepreneurialism. Definitely get a mentor or someone who knows the industry well and that can be a reliable source of assistance and guidance to you. It will give you insight into the culture of your choice and gain confidence, better time management and develop networking skills. I would also advise for you to create a vision board, a physical collage of images of your dreams and aspirations. This is a visual of positive affirmations that can help you get your ideas organized for you and your business. You also have to take action and do the work, you will start to see how the things that you’ve envisioned suddenly begin to manifest. Don’t be afraid to dream big! Lastly, seriously consider reading the book, The Secret. A book where it explains in detail the powerful ways you can truly gain success in life with techniques that use the Law of attraction.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My greatest aspiration in makeup are the legendary professional makeup artist who have paved the way for us. I especially want to highlight the SFX makeup artist who have brought us the most iconic characters in film. To name a few, Kevin Yagher, the creator of Freddy Krueger’s makeup and Chucky the doll. He has also wrote the screen story for the film Sleepy Hollow, and did all the makeup effects which he received a Hollywood Makeup Guild Award. Ve Neill, another cherished and respected makeup artist who brought us Edward Scissorhands, and was the makeup department head in the film The Amazing Spider-Man. She is also the most award-wining living make up artist with a lifetime achievement award from the MUA Guild. I gather inspiration, strength and true insight from the legends, I wish to follow in their creative magic. I have worked in association with MAC Cosmetics to become a makeup director head and give themed looks for their “Theme days”. It definitely has given me a wind of what the artist go through when working for these films.
