We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmine Pitt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmine below.
Jasmine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Anything beauty related has always been my passion. It all started when I was a little girl. I’d use the old school regular polish and paint my nails every other day. I remember blowing on my fingers so the polish would dry and the strong smell that would fill my whole house. I remember my mom always asking me where her favorite polish was and saying “I don’t know” knowing good and well I had it lol. I just loved all the colors. I loved how my hands looked. I loved how shiny my nails were. In elementary school I got my mom to buy me some blue French tip press ons for my school pictures. They were super long for someone my age but I loved them and I felt so cute wearing them. They were blue glitter frenchies if I remember correctly lol. As I got older my love for nails just grew more and more over time. In high school I started doing acrylic nails. Looking back I was way ahead of my time. I would paint my nails with all types of crazy designs. Kids at my school thought it was weird and too much but I didn’t really care. I liked what I liked and it turned my passion into a career in the long run. In college I started doing nails for my friends or whoever would let me practice on them. Eventually I started trying to take clients. I started charging $25 for a fullset. I was so happy just to be doing nails, but to get paid for it made me feel even better. I knew that this is what I wanted to do. Regardless of where I was or what I was doing, I found my true passion. Over the years alot has changed. I’ve moved around alot. I’ve started over time and time again but somehow I always find myself going back to doing what I love. And that’s having my own business being a creative
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jasmine. I’m 29 years old. I grew up in a really small town in North Carolina. I started doing nails maybe 8 years ago right out of college. Before that I always did my own nails and that’s how I knew I had a passion for it. I taught myself my craft but eventually did go to school just to have my license when I decided this was what I really wanted to do. I provide nail enhancement services and I also sell custom items including phone cases, iPad cases, custom crocs, and anything else that I can make look extra pretty lol. I feel as if my job is not just “doing nails”, it’s a huge part of peoples’ beauty routine. I make people feel good about themselves for a living. I make people laugh. I make people happy. I do more than just nail enhancements for my clients. I do everything in my power to brighten their day. I live by the philosophy “if you look good, you feel good”. So it’s my job to make people look and feel good about themselves. I am most proud of myself and my business because I never gave up. I’ve been told time and time again to find a “real job” and stop doing what I love as doing nails just isn’t practical in the long run. I’m proud of myself because I never lost my passion for doing what I love regardless of what life throws my way. I want my potential clients to know that I worked hard for my brand and I will always stand ten toes behind myself and my business. I pride myself on being professional when I need to be, but also still staying true to myself. I’m goofy, I’m fun, I love to laugh, and I love those that love me. I treat my clients like my family because without them none of this would be possible.
Have you ever had to pivot?
A little over a year ago, I had to stop doing nails. I put my business on pause because my personal life was in shambles. Not only did I have to pick myself off the ground, but I had to pack up my business and start over. An abusive relationship caused my life to shift abruptly. I moved to a new area in a new state and started over. I took a step back to recollect myself and get back on my feet until I was able to give my all to my business again. This made me realize that you always have to be ready for whatever life throws you. Plan A doesn’t always work out. Neither does plan B,C, or D sometimes. Whatever happens, follow your heart and give yourself grace.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a presence on social media can be very hard to manage and can be very stressful. So many people want to win and be popular overnight and that’s just not probable. You have to put in a lot of time and energy into building a platform. My biggest advice for someone that wants to build their social media presence is just post consistently. Make content out of any and everything. Just hit record. Whatever you’re doing, if it pertains to your business, you can make comment out of it. Content is key.
