We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
If I could go back in time, I would have definitely started my business way sooner. I’m only 29, but in today’s time with all the technology this younger generation is winning when it comes to advertising and promoting your business. There are so many ways to put yourself on the map and advertise your business. Back when I was in high school, we had cell phones and computers, but nothing compared to today’s time. If I could talk to my younger self today, I would tell her to be more confident in your ideas and start that business. Of course, I wasn’t as educated about starting a business, but the sources were out there I just needed to take advantage of them. I knew what I wanted to do with my life back in high school. I knew what I wanted to do with my life back in high school, I was just too worried about the what ifs and didn’t go that route till way after getting my bachelor’s degree in college. I started my business in October of 2019, after getting my degree and finishing cosmetology school to get my license. Moore Beauty, that is the name and I’m nowhere near where I want to be, but I am getting there. Consistency is key and like a good friend once said once you start your business don’t work for anyone else keep going. I think the change in my experience as far as starting my business sooner would be me being way further in my career at this point, but its better late than never.
Jasmine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Since I was younger, I was always an entrepreneur at heart. It started when I was as young as 8 years old doing my own hair parting it into ponytails and all. Going into middle school and high school it was no longer little ponytails I started adding hair to my own & styling, doing my own makeup, mixing eyeshadows, and doing friends’ hair from school too. I was taught at a young age to be independent and as a woman to have your own. My dad was an entrepreneur himself, having his own service & gas stations across Dallas, Moore’s Exxon. I learned a lot going to the shop with my dad and just seeing him day after day work hard to keep his business going, because who else was going to do it? My senior year of high school my dad passed away and my world drastically changed! My faith & spirit was broken and my mission from that day on was to make him proud. So, I did what he would have wanted me to do and that was go to school and get at least my Bachelor’s degree. I went off to UNT in Denton where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Everything was cool but I wasn’t happy, I always had a dream of having my own business which would be in the beauty industry something I always loved. My journey began and I then enrolled into Ogle School of Hair Skin & Nails in Arlington where I furthered my skills. In 2019 I won first place in a Hair Show of all the Ogle schools in Texas, alongside me was my model, the lovely Frey Angel. This was definitely my sign for sure that this industry was for me. I graduated and received my Cosmetology License and in December of 2019, I purchased my first Suite. My services include Color, Makeup, Locs, & Natural Hair. I then moved up to a bigger suite at S Factor Salon & Spa located in Duncanville, by February 2021 because my clientele grew tremendously. I can only thank the man above, considering all the things that could have stopped me!! I now have my own hair care & lash line and plan on reaching my future goals as I continue on my journey.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My social media audience was nothing when I started compared to what it is today. I was really lost when it came to social media it was something new and fresh. Im only 29 years old but growing up we werent used to all the social media. We had myspace and bebo lol . Now days social media can take you far just by uploading a video or picture. Word of mouth is one of the fastest ways to get your business out there but social media takes it to the next level. The advice i would give is to KEEP POSTING! Just because you get 1 like or 2 likes its ok people can still see your work and they are watching! Use your sources read up on these social media platforms and see what you can do with them to expand your brand. Tag people tag businesses and make your clients tag you as well, make your clients follow you on social media.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
This skill of mine was definitely my side hustle lol. Never did I think really that I would be doing this full time and making a career out of this. I always maybe thought about it and now look at me. It started out by making myself the model. People want to see that you are good at what you do and if you can do it on yourself, you can do it on anybody. Once I mastered my craft the best I could I started on other people and then so on. Makeup, hair, skin, nails , you name it i was hustling every way i could! It wasn’t until I got into cosmetology school that made me realize that I wanted and could make this my career. Once I realized and was confident in myself to work on clients, conversate with clients, and knew my worth to stick to my prices, that was it! You have to be able to really believe in yourself and your craft because if you don’t then who will?
