Jasmine , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?

Running my own law firm, The Mines Law Firm, since 5/29/2020, has been a journey filled with learning and happiness. I’ve always chosen to be my own boss rather than working for someone else, and this decision brings a lot of freedom with it. Since becoming an attorney, I have never worked for another attorney!

Being my own boss lets me pick the clients I want to work with. If someone has a bad attitude or if their case doesn’t feel right, I have the choice to say no. And I certainly do. This helps in building a strong and respectful relationship with all my clients, making my work more enjoyable and meaningful.

Having the freedom to decide my working hours and manage my tasks gives me control over my life, not just my business. This freedom is priceless and shapes my life in many wonderful ways. I travel as I want. I take days off as I need. I simply do what I want.

Sometimes, I do consider what life is like for those with a regular lawyer job working for someone else, especially when I am swamped with complicated cases. But then, I quickly realize that having a job like them would mean giving up all the freedom and control I have, and that thought makes me appreciate my choice even more.

As I am blessed to be highly sought after, I have the advantage to set and adjust my prices based on supply and demand, permanently increasing my rates when the demand is high. This is another aspect of the freedom and control I enjoy as a business owner.

Concluding, the joy and satisfaction I get from running my own firm, choosing my clients, managing my schedule, and setting my prices far outweigh the brief moments of wondering about a regular job. The choice to be an attorney and run Mines Law Firm have been fulfilling, allowing me to live my life on my own terms.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

A significant lesson I had to unlearn revolved around the extensive empathy I innately possess. In my profession, clients often approach me during their most vulnerable times—distraught, stressed, and overwhelmed with emotion. Initially, my instinct was to immerse myself in their emotional states, attempting to offer solace and understanding at these low points.

However, I soon realized that, to be truly effective and to serve my clients’ best interests, it was imperative to maintain a distinction between the roles of a therapist and a lawyer. I had to recalibrate my approach, focusing on employing logic and legal acumen above all, to navigate the complex legal landscapes effectively. While empathy remains a crucial component in understanding and connecting with clients, it was vital to unlearn relying solely on it in professional interactions.

The backstory lies in the countless interactions with clients who were overwhelmed with their circumstances. It became evident that the infusion of emotion could potentially cloud the logical judgement and strategic planning crucial in legal proceedings. Therefore, maintaining a balance became essential to ensure the most effective representation and guidance.

By doing so, I have been able to offer my clients clear-headed and pragmatic advice and strategies, which are fundamental in the legal realms. This unlearning and relearning process was pivotal, allowing me to refine my approach and provide the highest level of service, keeping my clients’ needs and best outcomes at the forefront.

I urge those who follow in my footsteps to be mindful of this delicate balance. Law school equips you with the legal acumen but may not prepare you for the emotional rollercoaster you’ll encounter in practice. Understand that to truly serve your clients, a balance between empathy and logic is paramount. Being prepared for this untaught aspect of our profession is crucial.
