Best Investment was to invest in black LGBTQ+ underserved youth in the South.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Jasmine McKenzie, a native of Miami, Florida, has emerged as an extraordinary leader within her community. As a black transgender woman living with HIV for nearly two decades, she has fearlessly shared her story and become a powerful advocate for change. Through her roles as a long-term survivor, mother, business owner, and certified HIV tester, Jasmine is dedicated to creating a safer and more inclusive future for Black TGNCNB+ AND LGBQ+ people.
Jasmine’s impactful journey began with Color N Raw, an agency that evolved into a youth enrichment program specifically designed for young Black TLGBQ+ individuals. In 2019, she established a drop-in center for the South Florida ballroom community, expanding her reach and impact. In 2020, she founded The McKenzie Project, Inc., a pioneering Black trans-led organization focused on advocacy and support.
Her remarkable efforts have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by the “Changemaker Award” from the National LGBTQ Task Force in 2021 and recognition for her exceptional HIV advocacy on June 4, 2022. Through her unwavering commitment, Jasmine has established two drop-in centers in Miami-Dade and Broward County, with her co partners Ashley and Morgan Mayfaire of Transsocial, where both organizations are significantly enhancing the level of support available to the TGNCNBLGBQ+ community.
In addition to her vital work within the South Florida Ballroom community, Jasmine serves as the esteemed mother of The Iconic and Legendary House of Ebony and holds the role of Co-Chair for Trans Pride Fort Lauderdale.Founder of The Trans Games, The T Market Place and Breathing While Black and Trans. What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a black transgender woman artist in Miami has its unique challenges, yet the rewards are abundant. One of the most fulfilling aspects is carving out a space where individuals with similar experiences can express themselves without judgment or discrimination. Creating a haven for those who share my journey has allowed me to reshape the creative landscape in the South and instill hope within the community.
As an underdog, I’ve had the privilege of demonstrating that preconceived notions can be shattered. Through various projects, programs, and events, I’ve not only showcased what’s possible but also educated others on the importance of avoiding judgment based on appearances. Building connections and chosen families has been the pinnacle of my creative journey, offering a sense of belonging and empowerment to those who have long been marginalized.
In a region where acceptance for black transgender creatives is limited, I’ve been able to break barriers and foster understanding. The ability to initiate change and be a beacon of hope within the community is a reward that transcends personal achievements. It’s a testament to the transformative power of creativity, allowing me to leave a lasting impact and inspire others to embrace their authentic selves.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can best support black transgender artists and creatives by fostering inclusivity, dismantling systemic barriers, and recognizing the unique challenges we face. Providing equitable opportunities, representation, and resources is crucial for a thriving creative ecosystem. It is essential because diversity in artistic expression enriches culture, challenges stereotypes, and contributes to a more vibrant and inclusive society.
Supporting black transgender artists changes the landscape within transgender communities by validating their experiences and showcasing a diversity of narratives. This representation helps combat stigma and discrimination, fostering a sense of belonging and pride within the community. When society acknowledges and uplifts the work of black transgender artists, it not only empowers individuals but also contributes to a broader cultural shift towards acceptance and understanding.
Moreover, creating an environment that values and supports black transgender creatives encourages future generations to pursue their artistic passions. This, in turn, promotes a cycle of representation, inspiration, and empowerment within the transgender community, challenging preconceptions and stereotypes.
In summary, supporting black transgender artists is essential for building a more inclusive, empathetic, and diverse society. By breaking down barriers and amplifying their voices, we contribute to a cultural landscape that reflects the richness of human experience and fosters a sense of pride and acceptance within transgender communities.
