We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Lubandi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I feel like my whole art career/business move relates to “taking a risk”. Back when I started focusing on making art into tangible products, then creating a small business to sell those products, it was a risk in it all to even put my art into the world..I had taken time off of work and we were in the beginning of a pandemic when I first started, so I thought it was a perfect time to focus on cultivating my art and getting prepared to start advertising my art through my socials and creating a business with it.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been into art growing up, I never thought I could make a career related to art at first because as I was growing up it didn’t seem like it was a positive or well liked career to go into…but then I stumbled on graphic design and went towards a degree in that, which was nice to apply my artsy skills in that way but I was still unfulfilled. I’ve always been a traditional artist and when I started with graphic design, I think that’s when I started diving into the world of digital art and learning how to draw like that. I instantly fell in love with drawing digitally. I was always doing challenges on instagram and drawing portraits to improve my skills. I started off creating tangible products with my art and thus creating my small business called “jlurose”. I made stickers for awhile but now we carry more than just that. I make stickers, memo pads, prints, crewnecks, tshirts, magnets, custom designs, and more! I make products themed in self care, self love, manifesting, positive vibes, and more! My goal has always been to remind others to take care of their mental health, do things that make THEM happy and not be held down to society’s standards, and providing an uplifting and positive space for others because those are a lot of things I needed when I was finding myself and hopefully inspire others to share the same support throughout!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is probably the community and support you can find on social media/returning customers. The community and friends I have met throughout my business journey have been the kindest and most beautiful souls I’ve come across and I’ve never met them in person but they understand what goes into all of this more than anyone in my current life.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I think advertising on social media has definitely changed a lot from the time I started, but I think the same motto applies now: Just keep posting. Posting can be a scary thing, vulnerable even to post about your artwork/products to the world. But you just have to get over the fact, who cares? Your content will stumble onto the right people, and network with others, connect with others related to your business. I also believe if you share the love (commenting, sharing) to others that they will return it to you as well.
