Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Lipsey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope to leave a legacy behind of being an example of breaking the mold, of never giving up. I want to show that no matter how the odds are stacked, you can overcome if you believe you can!
I believe in staying true to who you are and not conforming to the trends or the way the world wants you to be. There is no one better to be than yourself, because there is only one you!
I really hope I can continue to inspire people to build on their dreams and take that chance of doing something they love.
I want it to be known that you can make 1000 mistakes, fall 100 times and still turn it around and make something good out of life. It’s not always going to be easy but every day that you show up, matters and it adds up to something.
Simply because you are alive, you matter!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Jasmine Lipsey! I am a professional makeup artist and I also run a beauty company called RoseHand Art & Co. where I have a team of hair and makeup artists that are able for hire for any event you can think of! We work events such as weddings, quinceaneras, photoshoots, fashion shows, film, and brand campaigns.
I broke into the industry right out of high school, as I attended cosmetology school while I was still in high school and then QC makeup academy shortly after high school. My journey into the beauty industry actually started from a different angle in the modeling industry. Being a model I was able to use my hair and makeup knowledge to style myself and other models around me. I was able to learn lighting techniques and pick up on what worked and what didn’t on and off the camera. Once I had enough of being in front of the camera, I turned my sights to a more colorful outlet – Makeup Artistry.
Sephora employed me in 2016 just after I moved back to Michigan from Los Angeles, CA. I taught beauty classes for Sephora for 3 years and then went on to work with Artistry US, teaching on stage with them across the country and becoming a social media content creator for them.
In the beginning of my professional makeup career there was immense pressure to become like the trendy makeup artists I saw around me. My vision of beauty just was different than what I was seeing all over instagram. I am proud to say I stuck to my guns and continued building on my unique skills and developed techniques that really work for every single person that sits in my chair. I build my business with integrity and belief in anything is possible.
This belief has lead me to leading makeup in fashion shows in Detroit and assisting key makeup artist Rick Dicecca in NYFW this past September for Pamella Roland’s 20th anniversary show in NYC.
I value being efficient, and relatively quick in our works at events. It is important that my team is able to create versatile looks and not be stuck in one lane. Diversity and inclusivity are key highlights that I represent in my team and our clientele. Communication and professionalism are also a must to work with us at RoseHand Art & Co.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a time I was living in LA and I was dead set on being a professional model for the rest of my life. I wasn’t using my full potential and I frankly was living too shallow in comparison to what my life is now.
I had to make a decision when I was 23/24 and decide if this was the life I truly wanted to live.
Was I at peace? Did I feel like I had value? Was the energy I was putting out, coming back to me in a fruitful way? Was I making an impact on others in a positive way?
All questions I started to ask myself.
I found myself conflicted with my morality. I needed to change things up a bit and move from the position I was in.
Something didn’t sit right with me anymore and my life turned towards finding faith. I found myself caring more about the longevity of my actions versus living life in the fast lane. So I chose to stop modeling professionally and moved back to Michigan where my entire life changed and I dove deep into makeup artistry as my new career.
Choosing to close my modeling chapter, and start anew was one of the best decisions I’ve ever chose to make as well as allowing myself to trust the journey along the way.
I have learned that nothing I experienced went to waste, I use all of my experiences in the makeup industry now and use my knowledge to help others navigate their lives so they can be happy in what they are choosing to do.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was toxic positivity. This was taught to me and it was taught that everything was light. That nothing was truly dark. I had to unlearn this because this teaching dimmed the true light of how getting through dark times shapes us for bright futures. Choosing to ignore the bad parts of your life and deem them as invaluable sets us up for failure while living in a fantasy. I was able to find a balance between lifes good and bad times and find gratitude in everything that is gifted to us, whether a blessing or a lesson.
