We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Levine a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
In the realm of personal styling, the prevailing trend often leans towards acquiring the latest fashion, with an emphasis on big brands and seasonal fads. This approach tends to encourage overconsumption. My philosophy as a slow fashion stylist diverges significantly from this norm. I focus on cultivating a ‘dream closet’ that is both timeless and personal, emphasizing garments that flatter my clients’ unique body types and colors, resonate with their individual style, and are acquired through mindful purchasing decisions.
My process begins with my clients’ existing wardrobe, seeking ways to refresh their look without defaulting to buying new items. When additions are necessary, I refer to a capsule wardrobe checklist to select versatile, enduring pieces that promise longevity. I make a concerted effort to support small businesses and sustainable brands, reinforcing the value of conscious consumerism.
For photoshoots, instead of buying outfits that are likely to be worn only once, I prefer to rent vintage attire from local Dallas boutiques, advocating for secondhand usage and small business patronage. This philosophy is more than a stylistic choice; it’s a commitment to ethical consumption and a reflection of our responsibility towards the planet and its inhabitants. It’s about helping my clients look and feel their best, while also offering peace of mind about the origins and impact of their clothing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a sustainable personal stylist and Youtuber, my mission is to revolutionize the way we think about fashion, one wardrobe at a time. My services extend from wardrobe styling and photoshoot aesthetics to closet organization and personal shopping—all through a lens of sustainability. My journey into styling began when I styled my model friends for photoshoots and evolved through my experiences in retail, where giving people confidence through their clothes became my calling.
My pivot to sustainable fashion was sparked by a realization of our collective capacity to care for our environment through our consumer choices. In practice, I empower my clients by saving them time and maximizing efficiency in their daily routines with pre-curated outfits and organized closets. I advocate for longevity in fashion by reimagining the use of existing pieces and sourcing from smaller, ethical brands when shopping and vintage stores, for photoshoots.
What I believe makes me different is that I love helping people look at their old clothes in new ways, instead of just chasing after the latest styles or famous brands. I believe in the power of reinvention—transforming the old into new, and cherishable to timeless. Fashion, to me, is not a fleeting trend but a personal journey toward sustainability that I am honored to guide my clients through.
I want my audience to know that their best interest is the heart of my brand. I am committed to ensuring they not only look stylish but also feel a deep sense of satisfaction knowing their fashion choices contribute positively to the world.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The driving force behind my creative journey is to make fashion sustainable and personal. I strive to help people look and feel great in what they wear, not just by buying new things, but by making the most of what they already have. I aim to teach others that fashion doesn’t have to be wasteful and that we can make choices that are better for the earth and its people. My mission is to show that being stylish can also be sustainable, and I’m dedicated to guiding my clients on this path, every step of the way.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
If I could turn back time, I would have loved to know the power of a strong online presence right from the start. Utilizing Google Business has been a game-changer for getting my styling business noticed locally. It has allowed me to connect with clients who are searching for sustainable styling options. Moreover, a well-organized website has been instrumental in showcasing my services and philosophy, acting as a digital portfolio for potential clients. It’s like having my best foot forward around the clock.
Additionally, I can’t emphasize enough the impact that starting my YouTube channel earlier would have had. Sharing my journey, tips, and styling techniques through videos has significantly increased traffic to my business. It’s not just about visibility; it’s about building a community of like-minded individuals passionate about sustainable fashion. These tools have been pivotal in expanding my reach and they are resources I wish I had tapped into sooner in my creative journey.
