We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Horton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you manage your own social media?
I enjoy being a content creator so much. I am always recording content. I manage 4 accounts on Tiktok, IG and Facebook and 2 Snapchat accounts of my own. It’s definitely a lot of work and calls for a lot of organization and motivation. I love that aspect of it because it keeps me going and multifaceted in many ways.
I have been managing my own social media since 2014. I have never had anyone manage my content, but I have managed others Instagram and Facebook pages in the past.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Jasmine Horton, a 36 year mother of 2 girls from Rockford, Illinois. I have been in Dallas, Texas for 1 full year now and we love it! I started my luxury body care business Kustom Kremes Skincare in 2014. I make luxè body butter, exfoliating scrubs, body serums & lip serums. I am still working on that business and offer my products online and in a local wellness store in Rockford. My handle is @kustomkremes.
I take pride in my products so much that I became a licensed esthetician last August here in Dallas. I started Skyn By Jasmine last year while in Estiology school. It encompasses esthetic services, beauty routines and tips. I moved to Dallas January 16th 2022 and I started Aveda Institute January 18th. My handle is @skynbyjasmine.
I started my interior decorating business 2 years ago in Illinois. It’s another natural passion that I live for! I decorate homes, apartments, salons, business suites, etc. I have a natural gift and am looking to work with businesses and also offer virtual styling and personal shopping service. My handle is @jazzstyleshome.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was getting comfortable with people on a business level and not requiring contracts. I thought that my personality and work ethic meant that people would respect and handle things professionally, but that’s not always the case. I had a repeat client request my services in a way that I had never offered before. She wanted me to purchase all of her decor and come decorate her entire apartment in one day. I agreed and although the payment and date of payment were discussed, she paid me 2 1/2 months late and didn’t pay me in full. Lesson learned.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m actually experiencing a pivot in my life right now. I want to do so many different things, and sometimes I don’t limit myself. I am currently working in a luxury spa in Victory Park/ Downtown Dallas, and although I love it, I’m not completely fulfilled. I am transitioning from Illinois to Dallas. Transitioning from an airplane manufacturing and body care, to esthetics and interior decorating and more. Life is forever changing and by me being interested in many areas of creativity, so is my direction. I love that for me!
