We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Harding a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, thanks for joining us today. Often the greatest growth and the biggest wins come right after a defeat. Other times the failure serves as a lesson that’s helpful later in your journey. We’d appreciate if you could open up about a time you’ve failed
I’m a loc stylist therefore most of the heads that I deal with are dreadheads. One time a client came to me with an emergency hair situation. He was flying out the next day and desperately needed someone to do his hair but he wanted braids. I hadn’t done braids in years and the length of my nails posed a great disadvantage to the challenge at hand. I let him know that I was a little worried but he had great confidence in me and he badly needed it done. We finished after seven long hours. He had more hair than I anticipated and my nails caused more of a problem than I thought they would. We left both ecstatic to be done and didn’t really look at how it came out. The next morning I was mortified by the text he sent describing his disappointment with the end results. The back came out fine but the front was terrible. The lines were uneven and the braids were not tight at all. I was so embarrassed by my work. I told him if he booked with me the next style would be free, but that wasn’t enough for me I had to make it right and prove myself. I had to practically beg him for a second chance. In the end he did find the time to squeeze me into his schedule and loved how it came out the second time around! This taught me to have pride in your work and if you make a mistake own up to it and do whatever you can to make it right.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I had a friend who needed his hair retwisted and I offered to help. He was adamant that I was going to mess his hair up and that lit a fire in me. I started my business because someone told me I couldn’t. Initially, it was to prove a point but I soon grew a passion for it. After Covid, I wasn’t able to do hair anymore and it honestly put me in a bit of a depression. My mom suggested expanding my business into something that I can still do through the pandemic and that’s how JasAppeal Lashes was born. I now have three branches of JasAppeal, JasAppeal Hair, JasAppeal Lashes, and JasAppeal Dazzlers. I sell lashes and cosmetics as well as do hair. I’m most proud of my perseverance and growth when it comes to my business. I had a couple bumps in the road but I never gave up and I’m glad I didn’t because I can definitely see the difference between day one of my business to today. I put my all into every client’s hair and I strive to give nothing but the highest quality cosmetics to every customer. I aim for 100% customer satisfaction and I believe the amount of pride that I put into my work is what sets me apart from others.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that I got this reputation today because I didn’t give up. All of my clients who were with me from the beginning have seen my growth first hand and are always excited to tell others about it. Additionally, I have great pride in my work and always want my clients to be happy no matter how long it takes, I want the vision they have to come to life. Clients can definitely tell when you’re doing something just to get paid rather than doing it for the love of your work. It is important to not undersell yourself but it’s also important to have the passion for what you’re doing.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media has definitely been a huge advantage to me when it comes to building my business. A close second would be my business cards. I keep my business cards on me at all times. I have no problem walking up to a potential client, speaking with them and handing them a card. Even if they already have someone who does their hair I still offer it to them because you never know when their usual stylist is busy and now they know exactly who to come to. My business cards have a QR code that links them to my Instagram page where they’re able to see past client pictures as well as have access to my website.
