Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Gossett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well my flower journey start was completely unplanned. Some years back in Summer of 2016 I planned to take my dog (a corgi) to an event called Corgi Beach Day in Huntington Beach California. I read up on the event and saw that they had a costume contest for the dogs so I figured I’d create a costume for my dog so she could enter. I only had a couple days before the event so I decided to go to dollar tree and buy a bunch of flowers. My vision was to turn her harness and leash in to a floral experience and I did just that. I covered every square inch of the harness and the leash with pink, purple and green flowers and needless to say, it was a hit! She won the contest. So during the process of creating the costume I realized just how much I enjoyed working with flowers. It was such a tranquil process that brought me a lot of joy and I knew I wanted to keep on creating and that flowers had become my overnight passion.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jasmine Gossett. I’m a California native and a single mother to a beautiful daughter named Jadestone (hence my brand name). I have been a freelancer/business owner in the floral industry since 2016. I started my business by creating a floral design for my dog for an event at the beach. That design led me to start creating hair flowers for a few years. I created flower clips and large scale headdresses for a variety of well know burlesque models, pinup models and Hula troupes. After years of designing these hair accessories I decided I needed a bit of a change and turned my focus to flower arrangements. This was a pivotal moment for my career. I completely rebranded myself by creating a new brand name and well as all new social media. It was a very refreshing start to a new but similar journey. My brand is now centered around creating flower arrangements out of high quality life like artificial flowers so that my customers can enjoy their arrangements for a lifetime instead of just a couple weeks like real flowers. Although I do work with real flowers as well my specialty is everlasting artificials. The floral industry as a whole is quite large but there are very few of us that work with artificial flowers. It’s nice to be a part of a somewhat niche community and to be able to provide people with the same modern and unique style arrangements that they would receive from someone who works with real flowers.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Consistency! Consistency! Consistency! It doesn’t get anymore straightforward than that. In order to achieve anything through social media you have to be consistent. I try to make sure I’m posting new reels or pictures at least a few times a week. As we all know social media is constantly changing. At some point pictures were the best way to reach your audience. Now the best way is through reels and short videos. You have to be able to pivot to keep up with these trends so that you can keep your engagement up. Another thing I’ve learned is that people love to see the person behind the work. Don’t be afraid to post videos and pictures that feature you creating or modeling your pieces. The experience is much more personal for the costumer when they have a face to relate the brand to.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The initial capital for Petals for Jadestone was established through my full time job. I was a customer service manager at Bed Bath and Beyond by day and a floral stylist by night. I would work on my brand before going in to my day job. Also during my lunch break and after work. I saved as much as I could from Bed Bath and Beyond to be able to build up my initial funds to purchase flowers and shipping materials.
