We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jasmine Golden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The story behind my mission is simple…legacy! A legacy not only for my children but for my community. Growing up and living in an environment where I’m always seen as the minority its important to show my children and others around me that anything is possible even when there may be so-called “limitations” that others may not face.
Jasmine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Jasmine Golden, a mother of four and wife of 11 years. I have a masters in accounting which help me tremendously in operating my bakery Oh My Yum! Oh My Yum started off as a home-based bakery that is preparing to open its first retail location in early 2023. My passion for baking and cooking started at a young age when I used to watch my grandmother cook. Although Oh My Yum is a bakery, it’s not just a bakery. I see Oh My Yum as an opportunity to grow. Not only grow me but my community by inspiring others to start their own businesses and giving back to their community by utilizing their passion and gifts.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In order to be a business owner, well a successful business owner I believe you have to be or learn to become resilient. Being able to bend but not break. And of course, some have to be a little more resilient than others depending on their background and the opportunities available. Being resilient means making wise choices and doing what’s best mixed with some intuition. While on this business journey and looking to expand business outside of my home so my family and I can get back to some kind of normalcy outside of the business I have encountered a few situations where I have had to be resilient. I have been turned down for business loans, turned down for retail spaces, and things move super slow when I thought it would be quick. But at the end of the day you have to remind yourself that anything worth having is worth fighting for, so FIGHT!!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are plenty of books that have aided me on this entrepreneurial journey. Some include the following: start with why, a story that tells, the speed of trust, surrounded by idiots, sweet success, stories that stick, the 1-page marketing plan, show you work, atomic habits, I will teach you to e rich, building a storybrand, grit, the emyth, crushing it, and the big leap.
