We were lucky to catch up with Jasmine Frink recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
So, how did I come up with the idea to create Media Maverick?
Funny enough, I didn’t, my first Sales Manager at a Fox affiliate in Columbia, SC did. His name was Scott, and I’ll never forget him or how he gave me the nickname “Maverick.” It was because I had never done anything the traditional way. While the rest of the sales team followed the script, I was over here flipping the page, rewriting the story, and doing my own thing. At first, I was lowkey offended (like… sir?!), but then I Googled it….” an independent-minded person who refuses to conform.” I was like… oh, so me.
And once I saw the word was connected to icons like Top Gun’s Tom Cruise (aviators, hello 👋🏾) and Maxine Shaw from Living Single, the witty, bold, brilliant queen of my dreams. I fully embraced the title.
I’ve always had a love affair with all things media. I’ve worked in the newspaper, radio, and TV Industries, you name it. From sales to promotions, digital to production, PR to strategy. I’m basically a media Swiss Army knife in heels. 🖤
Eventually, I realized that corporate just wasn’t built for folks like me. So I took everything I learned and built Media Maverick, a boutique-style approach to helping small businesses and creative brands show up boldly and strategically. It’s white-glove, results-driven, creative, and always rooted in data (because I love a good spreadsheet and a solid strategy, don’t let the lashes fool you).
Media Maverick is where passion meets precision. I’m not here to do things like everyone else, I’m here to help you stand out while staying true to yourself. Because that’s what being a maverick is all about. 💅🏾✨
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m Jasmine Frink, the creative engine behind Media Maverick PR & Marketing Agency, where strategy meets soul and storytelling meets results. 💫
I’m a proud South Carolina girl, raised with sweet tea in one hand and big dreams in the other. I’ve always had a thing for stories: the kind that move people, shift culture, and spark action. My journey into media started early, and I’ve worked across every corner of the industry, from newspapers to radio to television to digital. I’ve worn all the hats: sales, promotions, PR, content strategy, production… basically, if it’s media-related, I’ve probably done it in heels and with a smile.
I actually got my nickname Maverick from my first Sales Manager at a Fox affiliate in Columbia, SC. He gave it to me because I never did things the way everyone else did; I had my own rhythm, and I wasn’t afraid to go against the grain. At first, I was like, “Wait, is this shade?!” but once I Googled it and saw Maverick meant bold, independent, and unafraid to break the mold (and that it’s associated with Top Gun and Maxine Shaw from Living Single), I wore it like a crown.
I’m also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and I carry that legacy of excellence, sisterhood, and service into everything I do. Fun fact: I ran a competitive dance team for three years with my best friend; we were fierce, fearless, and fabulous (still are 💁🏾♀️).
My passion for storytelling extends beyond business, too. I’m the author of the children’s book Behold My Beauty, a love letter to little Black girls everywhere to remind them of their worth. I’m also producing my first short documentary, Four Blocks: The Last Black Pearl, which captures the stories, strength, and spirit of a disappearing Black neighborhood with the intention of honoring its legacy and preserving our history.
At Media Maverick PR & Marketing, I help creatives, nonprofits, small businesses, and founders get seen, heard, and celebrated through strategic storytelling, social media, PR, content production, and digital marketing. I take a white-glove approach, customized, high-touch, results-driven, but always rooted in who you are as a brand.
What sets me apart? I’m not here to slap a filter on things and call it branding. I care deeply. I listen closely. I create strategies that blend data with intuition, vision with execution. My clients get someone who’s as invested in their growth as they are, and who’s going to make the process feel fun, fly, and totally aligned.
I’m most proud of building a business that reflects me: creative, grounded, purpose-filled, and a little bit sparkly. ✨ If you’re ready to tell your story in a way that connects, converts, and stays true to your essence, then welcome, you’ve found your Maverick.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Whew, resilience? Let me tell you, I’ve lived that word.
In August of 2021, I packed up my life in South Carolina and moved to Austin, Texas, sight unseen. No real plan, no big crew waiting on me, just faith, courage, and a little “I got this” energy. I moved here for a new opportunity with the local CBS affiliate, excited to take on a new chapter and build something beautiful. But life had other plans.
Shortly after I arrived, I went through a rough and honestly scary breakup with the only person I knew in this brand-new city. That moment shook me. I chose to stay.
Fast forward to 2023, my world turned completely upside down. I lost my job in October… and then just weeks later, I lost my stepfather, the only father figure I had left in my life. Those two losses back-to-back broke something in me. I was heartbroken. I was angry. I felt like life had just ripped the floor out from under me, and it kept on coming.
Over the months that followed, I lost my dream career, my dream home, my car, everything that once made me feel safe and steady. Then came 2024, and I lost five more family members while still trying to rebuild my life from the ground up.
And yet… here I am.
Through it all, the grief, the uncertainty, the nights when I cried myself to sleep and still woke up with a plan, I built Media Maverick. I used every ounce of pain and turned it into purpose. I poured my heart into a brand that helps others tell their stories, connect with their audiences, and show up for their dreams, even when life isn’t perfect.
Resilience isn’t just bouncing back. Sometimes, it’s crawling. Sometimes, it’s starting over when you’re still grieving. Sometimes, it’s building something powerful with shaky hands. But through all of that, I’ve learned: I may bend, but I don’t break.
And that’s the heart of Media Maverick, it was born in the fire, built with love, and grounded in the belief that even in the darkest moments, you still deserve to shine. ✨
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn (and keep reminding myself of, honestly) is this: no one wants your dream more than you.
For the longest time, I assumed that if I showed up with heart, passion, and vision, everyone around me would naturally be just as excited and all-in as I was. But let me tell you, that’s not always the case. And it doesn’t mean people don’t love you or support you, it just means they can’t carry what was never given to them.
There were so many moments on my journey where I waited. Waited for someone to join me, validate me, and co-sign the vision. I would get frustrated when folks didn’t show up the way I expected. I poured into projects, partnerships, and even people who didn’t have the same fire I did, and I learned (the hard way) that dragging people toward your dream will wear you out and dim your light.
When I built Media Maverick, it came from a place of deep personal transformation. I had lost so much: my job, my home, people I loved, and I realized that if I didn’t go hard for myself, nobody else could do it for me. That was my job. My dream. My calling.
So now? I move differently. I still love big and collaborate often, but I lead with the understanding that this dream has my name on it. I don’t wait for permission, and I no longer get offended when others don’t match my energy. I trust my own fire, and I surround myself with people who add to it, not question it.
Unlearning that lesson helped me stop outsourcing my belief. Now I know: no one wants your dream more than you… and that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.
