Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Carson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jasmine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first client, actually was a co worker of my father. My dad has been on his job 30 years and I was currently in cosmetology school still doing hair at my mom’s house. But eventually that season of doing hair at home came to a end and I was able to find a small suite downtown in my hometown. I had did my first clients daughters hair before at her home and she loved it. Therefore, she had got my contact information then and said she would contacting me soon so I could style her hair. It was perfect timing when she contacted me about getting serviced. I had just moved into my suite & she was my first official client in a salon setting. It was an amazing feeling that can’t be explained!

Jasmine , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a licensed Cosmetologist who specializes in natural hair. My hair services don’t include a flat iron. I do not offers relaxer (a chemical that transforms curly hair to straight) services at ALL. My passion has always been styling natural black hair no matter the texture or length. The motto at Creationz that Jazz is healthy hair is happy hair, regardless if it’s one inch or 10 inches. I create styles that embrace our African heritage which include braids, two strand twist, Bantu knots & much more. I do add weave if requested by the client but I honestly prefer styling natural hair. But I understand the convenience of protective styles with weave.
Being the little African American girl with natural hair & being picked on for it. I wanted to make a difference in how we viewed our hair when I decided to pursue a career in Cosmetology. I want black men & women to love their natural crown no matter the texture. Sadly, why so many laws are enforced in the U.S to protect us from hair discrimination. In 2024 we are still being judged for our natural hair styles.
In Cosmetology school I learned the importance of add on services (trims & etc) and selling merchandise. I sell bonnets, t-shirts & biker shorts to support my brand CTJ (acronym for Creationz That Jazz). Branding and Marketing is everything in business! I’m actually a proud Alumni of Georgia State University with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. So I know the importance of word of mouth marketing & social media, I’m grateful to have a degree as a licensed Cosmetologist. The knowledge I was taught in those classrooms in Atlanta surely helped my business succeed.
I had the honor of being on the news for my philanthropy in my hometown. I was actually referred by a client who was a young beautiful news anchor at 13wmaz. I love giving back to my community! Shirley Chisholm said it best Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.” In conclusion, I love NATURAL HAIR and I just want us to love our natural God given hair more!
Whether curly, coily, a fro or in locs I want US as people of melanin tones to embrace our natural beauty. Our hair was never meant to be straight, so my mission statement will always be embracing our natural hair no matter the texture all healthy hair is HAPPY HAIR.
Black hair is culture & the beautiful thing about black hair is all the different styles that can be created.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Even though we live in the world of modern day social media. I feel that word of mouth marketing will always be BEST for business. I actually got a lot of exposure from when my salon was figured on the news. It brought me a lot of clientele but the constant clients remained loyal after the wave of the news.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So two years ago I downsized. I went from having a salon or three rooms to just having a suite. It was truly a moment of resilience for me. I had situation at my previous location that forced me to relocate, but I can honestly say I have enjoyed having less responsibilities. I have lived both roles being the owner & renting the suite. God has showed me in this season downsizing is not bad, have faith in him. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans : 28
