Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine B. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Pure drive and determination is what I believe it takes to be successful. Putting your best foot forth and actually believing in yourself. Being able to create a plan that is effective and consistent with your everyday life tactics.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the women’s apparel industry due to me not being able to finding affordable clothing for women that’s my size and height. I also wanted to showcase how people in my culture should conduct business. I noticed a lot of Black Business owners were very rude to their customers and I didn’t like it. Now, I’m not the perfect business owner, never will be. However, I’ve always treated my customers the same way I wanted other business owners to treat me. I remember when I was 12 years old, I told my people that when I grow up, I want to be an entrepreneur and a family lawyer. As we can see I lived up to my expectations lol. I’m not a family lawyer however I am a social worker in which I deal with multiple clients and their families every day almost.
I am most proud of the woman that I’ve grown to be. I experienced a very ROUGH patch in my life a couple of years ago and it just felt like every year after things kept getting worse and worse. However, I managed to break through. I managed to embark on a healing journey that was not only needed physically but mentally. Life is not easy. I will never say that it is. But what I will say is whatever positivity you put out, GOD will allow blessings to circulate back around tenfold.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy I would say is to be you. People love when business owners express themselves. Show the people your authentic side. Nobody likes a liar. Nobody likes a business owner/ professional who forceful showcases this “lavish” lifestyle when in all actuality it’s all a front. Be truthful. Be authentic. Be FOREAL!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I graduated with my master’s degree. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved being a business owner. However, when I graduated with my MSW, I started to focus my professional career towards that. There’s only 4% black therapists in the world and I happen to be one of them. I found my real niche and I absolutely love it. This career sets me apart from many and I love that for me!
