We recently connected with Jasmine Alexander and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmine , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned the art of Acting early on I jumped into a 8 eight week beginner/business Acting Class and I felt like that really boosted my career. A lot of people jump right into Acting and have no training behind them. That was the start of me continuously being in Acting classes religiously. I will admit early on I did just jump into background Acting, which is also great, but I feel like I could have sped up my acting career by simply learning the art form and then jumping into auditions and going straight from there.. the skills that I felt like was most important for me is learning the business side of Acting. It’s one thing to know how to portray a character, but there’s another thing to know how to manage the business side of this and that’s very important. I feel like I have no obstacles.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the entertainment industry through my love for Acting, but my journey truly expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic when I decided to step behind the camera and explore filmmaking. It started as curiosity, and quickly became a passion. I realized I didn’t want to wait for opportunities I wanted to create them. That decision changed everything for me. One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning the filmmaking process while doing it in real time. It wasn’t easy, especially navigating this industry, which can be difficult for independent creators and women filmmakers. But those challenges pushed me to become more confident, resourceful, and fearless in my vision. I am most proud of the awards and recognition I have received as I stayed on this journey, a path I wasn’t even sure was for me.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an creative is the ability to tell stories that connect with people on an emotional level, knowing that something I created can make someone feel seen, understood, or even inspired makes all the hard work worth it. As both an actress and a Filmmaker, I love being able to bring characters and ideas to life, whether that’s in front of the camera or behind it.

Have you ever had to pivot?
A major pivot in my life and career happened during COVID-19 pandemic. Like many artist, I experienced a sudden pause in opportunities, which forced me to reevaluate my path. Instead of waiting for things to return to normal, I made the decision to step behind the camera and learn filmmaking. That pivot wasn’t planned, but it became one of the most important turning points of my career, taking on filmmaking meant stepping into unfamiliar territory and facing a steep learning curve, but it also gave me creative control, and a new sense of purpose, writing and directing my own projects allow me to tell stories that felt authentic to me, and that shift ultimately led to award-winning films and film festival screenings looking back, that pivot taught me the importance of adaptability and trusting myself enough to take risk, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
