Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Alexander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My passion for the arts goes back to when I was very young. I was always a movie lover however, it was just one movie that made me decide that I wanted to become an actress. What love got you to do with it. Starring Angela Bassett. That movie inspired me to want to create and entertain. I would sit and watch that movie over and over although I was young and probably shouldn’t have been able to watch it. I’m glad I did. I have always been very mature for my age so even that young I understood that it was a movie and these incredible actors are betraying the lives of others. That movie provided me with not only entertainment but clarity on my own acting journey.
Jasmine , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I am an actress and filmmaker. I started my acting journey back in 2015. In Dallas, Tx. Although acting has always been a dream of mine. I didn’t quite know how to start. In 2015 my husband ran into. someone that was an actor and he told us a website to get on. From there my acting journey began. I started out like most actors in the background or being an extra. I then worked my way into speaking roles in different short films, feature films, and student projects. All. while studying the craft in acting classes. I later moved to Atlanta, Ga where I reside currently. My family and I moved right in the most of the pandemic so it wasn’t a lot of production companies or casting opportunities available. It was during that time I decided to create my own short film. It was just me, my camera, and my lights. Although that film was not the best it gave me the confidence I needed to create more. So that’s what I did. I create 6 other short films. Which three of those later went on to be submitted to film festivals where I have won multiple awards such as “Best actress, Best women filmmaker, and best short. I think what sets me apart from others is my passion to create no matter what my circumstances are. What I am most proud of is my accomplishments so far. I feel like I have created opportunities for myself and others without allowing LIFE to hold me back. I would love for my story to inspire others to take chances on there self because you never know where it will take you.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There are a ton of resources I wish I knew about in my Acting and filmmaking journey early on. first I would say networking, in general, would be a great way to collaborate with other filmmakers and also meet different creatives in the industry. Film Festivals is another resource I wish I knew about early on. Collaborating with other actors would be another one. We actors have more power than we give ourselves credit for we are the ones that make the movie come alive. So I feel like if I would have gotten with other actors early on I may have started my filmmaking journey way sooner than I have. Another resource I will say I wish I knew about would be Facebook groups. A lot of people don’t use the resources right in front of them. We are on social media 24 /7 so why not check into these groups? I know a lot of people feel like it’s not helpful but I can honestly say simply using Facebook groups in my niche has helped me tremendously especially being new here in Atlanta it has allowed me to meet others that were on the same path and has allowed me to collaborate and create beautiful work with those others that are also looking to grow.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being creative is being able to inspire others to go after their dreams. I love when I share my story with people and It allows them to realize that they can do it too. I am not superhuman I’m just like you. If you have a dream, go after it no matter how old you are or how young you are as long as you’re alive and you have the passion for it go after it.
