We recently connected with Jasmin Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Jasmin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Teach me how to pray and that God is real. No matter what you call the life essence in each of us that wakes us up in the morning, there is an essence, and it is within us all. My belief in this power, and my ability to recognize that everyone doesn’t call it the same thing has not only fueled my career and passion as a performing artist, but has saved my life, and the lives of those connected to me :)

Jasmin , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a vocalist and composer, dancer and choreographer, filmmaker and producer, and home chef! I’m currently most known for being an Art on theMART commissioned artist in Chicago for the ‘Year of Dance’ in 2022. My debut album ‘Applied and Aligned’ is out on all platforms, and I’ve recently received a grant to tour it, more on that coming soon. I’ve worked with TEDxStanford, Netflix, and Grammy Award winning artists. I’m currently a producer and music supervisor for an MFA student film for UCLA, currently on a national run through ‘Our Rights to Gaze’ partnered with Full Spectrum Features. I’m an Associate and Impact producer for the film ‘I Said, NO’ produced by Full Spectrum Features and Motion/Pictures Dance. I’m also currently in post-production as a choreographer on the film ‘BAWDY’ a dance narrative film that tells the story of how “our bodies do not determine our worth” with Full Spectrum Features and Motion/Pictures Dance Project. Lastly, I’m full-time in school, finally pursuing my Bachelor’s in Arts for Music Production, with a minor in English. I also teach yoga, I’m 200HR certified through CorePower Yoga.
I specialize in being the performing extraordinaire that connects people with their true selves and others; that kind of multi-disciplinary performing artist that may come around once to twice in a generation; and I’m most proud of my confidence in accepting that I am just that 🙂 I also am conversant in another language, world-traveled, and am a great public and private speaker. People really listen when I speak, and I’m continually learning how to be even more intentional with what I say. I’m proud that through all the trauma, trial, and triumph — I’m so a lover girl, fierce, determined my own way, and love God — truly.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Reminding people that we are biologically wired for connection! I think it’s something we all forget, that our bodies and minds literally crave and need connection. None of us are meant to do anything completely alone, and to be frank, we never do. When you’re birthed, there’s assistance that gets you here, whether that’s your mommy pushing you out or someone pulling you out. When you die, someone has to decide what to do with your body if you haven’t, and if you have, you need them to follow those instructions. I mention specifically birth and death, because a lot of people say those are the two things you do alone, and you don’t. People need people every step of the way, everyday; and artists have a keener understanding of this.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Connection. To myself and my own innate power, and to other humans and life forms (dogs, water, etc). Being an artist is so fulfilling because I’m using my gifts to navigate the world and it is such a privilege, and I want to remind everyone it isn’t a privilege reserved for those deemed artists. There’s an art to everything, and even though it may not feel like it. There are also systems that oppress. We’re all born free to discover our gifts, and choose how to allow them to make room for us in the world.
