We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmin Plouffe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmin below.
Jasmin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
As a business owner, you bet on yourself every day. It could be something super scary like saying no to a potential client or prioritizing yourself each morning before doing client work. Taking risks is something you have to get comfortable with. You also need to remind yourself that you’ve done it once before, so you can do it again.
The catalyst of all my risk-taking as a business owner was when I decided to pursue freelancing instead of getting another full-time job. I had just got laid off after 10 years at one company. I wanted to leave sooner. But I didn’t want to let down my team, I didn’t want to disappoint my parents, and I didn’t want to be known as a quitter.
Getting laid off was a blessing in disguise. I took a chance on myself and explored what I liked and didn’t like about design. I worked with non-profits, government legislatures, and even designed a chicken dinner cookbook. Ultimately, I landed on brand development. I love learning how my client’s stories ignite their passion for their businesses.
The smart thing I did when I took a risk on me was to surround myself with other entrepreneurs. It was their stories and resiliency that reminded me I could do it too.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Jasmin. I help you attract your dream customers with head-turning branding design.
I never thought I would be an entrepreneur. I clearly remember telling my mom “I’m never starting a business. So why do I need to take a marketing class?” It’s funny how things work out. Because I don’t ever see myself turning back.
I love helping my clients see possibilities. Yes, I design logos, websites, and whatever other visuals you need to achieve your business goals. But it’s more than that. It’s helping them work towards their dream vision. It’s using their story so they fall in love with their brand…and themselves even more. It’s helping them bravely step into the CEO role and feel like they got this.
A proud mama bear moment is when my clients celebrate all their wins. Not just the big milestone like hitting 5-figure months. But the small everyday wins like being able to admire their garden midday. Or not being embarrassed to show up on camera without their hair/makeup done. It’s helping them live more presently and savor every moment.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was practice makes perfect. Practice does NOT make perfect…it makes progress. I am the oldest child in my family…very type A.
As an entrepreneur, I had to learn to release my perfectionism. And detach from external results that were beyond my control. This is easier said than done.
When I tried to show up perfectly, I wouldn’t show up. I stressed on the little things. I wouldn’t talk about myself or my business. And I would never show any of my work because I never thought it was good enough. Major problem because I design for a living.
Perfectionism prevented me from fully showing the world what I had to offer. The next unexpected result when I said f*ck it, I’m going to have more fun in my business. I fell in love with it again. Being my authentic self attracts more people to me. My gutsiness inspired them and want to learn how to achieve that for themselves.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I used to say my best source of new clients is networking. But when you really look at it, it’s relationship building. So that could be networking, referrals, social media, etc.
It’s being genuine with everyone I meet. Instead of going straight into selling, I’m curious about who they are and what they do. Just like dating, you wouldn’t propose on the first date. So why would you think selling your offers to someone you’ve just met is effective?
You want to build an inner circle of people who like you, know you, and trust you. Because even if they aren’t your ideal client, you may know someone who is and will then introduce you to each other.
