We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmin Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmin below.
Jasmin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
On the personal side I definitely would’ve put myself out there sooner. In past times I was a serious victim of perfectionism. It has to be like this or that! No, not really. It needs to reflect your passion! Stop being overly critical and approach this with boldness and tenacity is what I’d tell myself.
Business wise it’s finances and strategy. You need to know your budgets and pricing for everything. As a baker most emphasis is put on the baked goods/labor but what about marketing and brand identity? The price of content creation? All of this is vital.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Omg HI! My name is Jasmin and I run a home-based bakery in Memphis,TN. I’ve been a lover of sweet things all my life but I decided to pursue it professionally a little over a year ago. My inspiration to start was God given, it felt like a bulb flicked on in my heart. Every since then I’ve been making goodies you can taste the love in. For me that’s my pride. I literally put hugs in my batter and kisses in my buttercream! People can take one bite and from there it’s all good vibes. That’s the Lot’s Of Sugar effect.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Authenticity, consistency and good customer service. Aligning my brand identity with my personality was a huge key; as well as being kind. Show gratitude even if they don’t buy anything. People never forget the way you make them feel. Be yourself and keep going! Make sure your customers get a piece of you in everything you do. Your connection to your business and customers should be seamless. That’s what attracts a loyal tribe of supporters.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before creating Lot’s Of Sugar I stepped out on faith with 2 other businesses. Her•Happi was focused on women’s wellness and 9 Of Diamonds which was streetwear. As much as I enjoyed them, something was missing from the foundation. I had to step back and get realistic about what I wanted. It wasn’t until I pivoted into silence that I realized what those businesses were for. Today I can see how Lot’s Of Sugar is a combination of both, even though they’re completely different industries. I knew letting them go wasn’t a failure but I had no idea it was a warm up! I’m appreciative of the process! I was able to be a student to the experience and gain inspiration for rebranding Her•Happi. Ultimately, my pivot is about being intuitive and having faith that the dots will connect and they did! They do every time!
