We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasmeen Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasmeen below.
Jasmeen, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
In January 2020, right before we had any idea of a pandemic coming our way in North America, I quit my stable job at the University of Texas, Austin, to focus full-time on building my business, House of Chiron. I was about four months away from graduating with my bachelor’s in psychology, working full time, and a single woman raising two young boys. My plate was full, but I believed in what I was creating so much that I put all my chips in on this bet! I was told how crazy and irrational I was, and I understand the idea, especially not having any other source of income to support my boys and me. You know how you can’t explain a thing; you just feel it? That was it for me; I felt this urge pulling me for months! I was burned out at work and simultaneously living high on life as a soon-to-be graduate (a goal that I had been after for 15 years). I took the leap; I quit! Then boom – the pandemic hit! I thought I would be tanked financially, but House of Chiron carried me as if I still had a full-time job that year, confirming that I made the right decision.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Working in the mental health field was never something I thought I would be doing as a career. As a young child, my aspirations involved being front and center on someone’s stage and, later in life, creating a dance school for little black ballerinas like me. For most of my life, I have been a dancer – ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, modern, and the list continues, but that’s not where life’s journey carried me. Fast forward, it’s the spring of 2017 in Austin, Texas, and I had just enrolled in the only HBCU university in Austin – Huston-Tillotson University to pursue a degree in psychology. The shift in career focus came from the many trials life threw my way. Around 2016-2017, I dived deeper into spirituality and what that meant for me. I determined that there is no “one” way to honor your existence and purpose. My relationship with God, The Universe, Source, and The Most High – however one decides to identify, never felt genuine in traditional settings. I began exploring different ideologies, metaphysics, and belief systems to find what I resonate with more. I come from a background that provided me with variety – My biological father was a Caribbean man with Latin roots from Brooklyn, New York but practiced Jehovah’s Witness. My mother is a Creole-French indigenous woman from Texas who was a preacher’s grandchild that eventually practiced hoodoo. My stepfather was a retired Navy Seal from Oklahoma who practiced Buddhism. While in school pursuing my bachelor’s, I needed an outlet to express the internal changes that I was experiencing while diving into spirituality. So I did what any millennial would do – I created a separate Instagram page to share my thoughts, experiences, free tarot readings, and astrological insights. This is how House of Chiron was built. I knew astrology, metaphysics, and spirituality were helping me heal trauma, so I figured this could also assist others. I knew I was gaining insight and understanding of my own patterns and cycles with the combined knowledge of astrology and psychology, so I figured that too, could help others. I knew that once I obtained my license as a therapist, I would include these modalities as mental health tools, but I didn’t expect to become an astrologer with an entire astrology business. The idea came created itself in real-time. The name House of Chiron came as I continued to study astrology and learned about Chiron, the asteroid known as the Wounded Healer. In Egyptian mythology, Chiron is also known as Anubis – The God of Lost Souls. The brief story of Chiron is that he was a Centaur that experienced guilt and shame for being different than the other Centaurs in his tribe. It was this great wisdom and power from his wounded experiences that led him to heal others that healed himself. I saw myself as such; I can only relate to myself with connection and service to others. I can only heal myself by showing the lost souls to the light of their own power – I do this with astrology, the healing energy of reiki, my background in psychology, and my hand-poured reiki-infused candles.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I had to unlearn or, more so, ignore was the cookie-cutter, standard business practices. Yes, there is a psychology behind the consumer and why they purchase certain things, but in my business, there is no strategy or way to do business. All is spiritual, so the clients that need me will find me. I had to develop that belief to the point of inner knowing. We as entrepreneurs could do some things to boost sales, but in the spiritual business, the primary key is to stay connected to your why. “Why am I doing this line of work now? I could’ve continued to pursue dancing or stayed at my comfortable job at the university.” There is nothing without the ‘why,’, especially in this line of work. I don’t support struggle or grind culture, as I believe in energetic exchanges, so even though I am a spiritual practitioner, I should still receive compensation for my work. I had to unlearn the toxic positivity surrounding the idea that money was “evil,” so spiritualists shouldn’t get paid. All things are energy, and money is a current to be exchanged – hence the word currency. Once I began aligning my self-worth with my values, my net worth also began to reflect that.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Expressing who you are openly, helps build a relationship with your clients. I learned early in the entrepreneurial world that people want to buy and receive services from someone they can relate to. I began to ask myself, “who do I relate to? What community do I identify with? What do I have to offer my target market?” The questions were answered as I shared my story more and more. I show my personality consistently in my free content, just as well as within my one-on-one sessions. I am vibrant, bold, creative, sensual, expressive, and confident in my work, but I can also express with a vulnerability that I have struggled to get here and maintain these attributes. I teach and preach to my market that healing is not linear; it’s cyclical. Right when you think you’ve healed or overcome a situation, it presents itself in another way, just for you to dive deeper into the many layers of healing. House of Chiron’s tagline is “Self-Awareness is Key!” I truly believe that! At the moment that we become aware of our light and shadows, we can move towards embracing these aspects of ourselves to live in our truth with wholeness. Most of the time, I am teaching and preaching to myself, and my clients benefit from it! Lol
