Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmaine Tinsley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmaine , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
I think it is normal to ask your friend and family to support your businesses . However, don’t have the expectation that they will. All your friends and family won’t share your business, purchase from your business, etc. The most support you will get will come from strangers. From personal experience, you will have a small circle or family and friends who will support you, but always be your number one supporter.
Rep your Merch! Share your own business and do it better than anyone else. Sometimes family and friends can be your biggest hater. For me I have some friends and family who’ve never shared my business or supported me in that aspect. And I have had some friends and immediate family that have supported me. It really just depends on who’s in your circle. But always support you harder than anyone else.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I’m currently an Account Manager for a 3PL. I got my degree in History and I’ve always loved history since I was a little girl! People always told me that I should become a teacher, but that wasn’t my passion; at least no in the traditional sense.
My brand I totally was named HERSTORY and then I decided to change it Belle Vie. It means Beautiful Life in French. History has a lot of dark events, but out of those dark events created beautiful events and people. I wanted my brand to highlight that.
My goal and passion is to teach history and spread the word that we are all a part of history and we have the ability to write our own history.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was being a people pleaser. I’ve always been a person who wanted to make others happy and for a long time I did not realize that it was at the expense of my own happiness and joy.
I experienced this after college when I made the decision to not attend law school. I felt so bad at first and then I realized that it’s not my responsibility to fulfill what someone else’s dream is for me.
Life is not about pleasing everyone else. There will always be someone unhappy about what you do and don’t decide to do. Make sure you fulfill what makes you happy and brings you joy.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my social media from scratch. I did not have hardly any followers. For example, when I started TikTok, I was very unsure of what to do.
So I just started posting different videos and different styles of content. Eventually I learned that videos I created surrounding trending topics gained more traction. Also being consistent. Posting every day or at least weekly will push your content further than being inconsistent with posting.
Ensuring that you interact with comments helps as well! My main advice is to just start posting. You’ll learn peak days and times that your videos will succeed best!
