We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jaslynn Gholson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jaslynn below.
Jaslynn, appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
When you tell your life story it can come with many criticisms, questions, and judgement. As an author I have learned to embrace this and just accept that people will either love me or they just won’t. Either way, I want to know that I stepped out into this world with my head heald high, knowing that I still love and accept myself whether other people do or don’t. People can try to turn you into someone that you know you are nothing like, but once you gain a relationship with yourself, no one can lie and try to tell you who YOU are. If you know you are light, don’t dim yourself for anyone.
Jaslynn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As an author I use to write to express myself because it was the only way I knew how. I never opened up about anything that I had ever been through until I was around 22. Around this same time I had writers block for about 3 years. One night I couldn’t sleep and I just had words in my head that wouldn’t go away, I got up and wrote them down and it turned out to be a poem. Even though the poem was about me, the way it was written I felt it wasn’t for me, but meant for someone else. I posted the poem on social media hoping to get it to whoever it was suppose to go to, and got a lot of positive reactions from it. I was told that I should write a book and “Silent Tears” was then created, and “The Angry Black Woman” followed shortly after, and I have been able to touch so many lives as well as my own. When it comes to baking, I use to bake with my aunt growing up and it was the only thing I thought at the time I was good at. Once she passed away, it became how I kept her with me because I was lost without her. I went from the box cakes, to going to culinary school and learning to bake from scratch, and then “Jazzy Bakes” was born. It’s been such a blessing to my life, and everyone around me.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My story has not only shaped me into who I am but it definitely brought the resilience out of me. I have faced every form of abuse, I’ve faced illnesses, a car accident, moving, loss of loved ones, divorce, and more. Life has not been easy to say the least, but the fighter in me will not allow me to give up, and the healer in me won’t allow me to fall. God has a higher purpose for me, if he didn’t I wouldn’t still be here. So if I’m going to be in this world, I’m going to make sure the world never forgets me. I am not afraid of what the devil could put in my path, it should be cautious of me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
When it comes to baking, my goal is to share the same joy my aunt gave me with the rest of the world. My desserts are delicious like many other bakers. However, the friendship, the bond, the respect that my clients and I have for each other is one of a kind. Being an author my mission is to do my part in bringing this world together because it’s not a one person job. No one on this earth should feel alone. Yet for years I struggled with feeling so alone in this world. If I have to share my story to connect with another; If I have to share my weaknesses so that you can experience strength, and if I have to be open so you don’t feel as though you have to be so closed off. Than by all means, that’s what I’m going to do.
