We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasiah Powers . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasiah below.
Hi Jasiah, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One meaningful project I did was one on the importance/the meaning of black hair in our community, and through that I was able to bring out 200 people just to show off their hair in the comfort of other people of color and sharing that experience. Seeing everyone else’s joy and satisfaction with the project and the fact that they enjoyed being at the shoot meant everything to me,it was definitely a moment that told me to keep going.
Jasiah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jasiah Powers, I’m a 20 year old multidisciplinary creative director and visual artist with a heavy focus on photography, videography, and editing. Im from Brooklyn New York where I was born and raised. In regards to services I offer photography and videography services as a primary means to sustain myself, and through that I use that to re invest in my creative endeavors to ensure I continuously grow with my work. What sets me apart however is how I got about doing a lot of my creative shoots/projects. I’d often use a theme like a specific culturally relative brand (telfar, polo,Northface etc) and use that as a bridge to bring other young people of color together so we can all connect with other creatives in our community and create in a comfortable environment. Essentially I use my photography to bring people together and instill a sense of community for people of color like myself. What I’m proud of the most is simply the amount of people I’ve been able to bring together with my creative projects. Through these ideas I’ve built and highlighted communities while bringing together 100s of people. That’s what matters to me the most. I’ve also been able to work with brands like, Nike,Roc nation, paper planes, woodstack, Puma, telfar and more
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Philanthropy as a whole is my ultimate goal. I wish to utilize my art to give back to my community in as many ways as possible. The way I see it,me using my art as a outlet solely for my personal gain and satisfaction just doesn’t feel right to me. I wanna use my talents in the best ways possible.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Trying to do everything on your own. Me as a person I never liked the feeling of relying on others so I always tried to do any and everything on my own. Until I had a moment of realization where I came to terms with the fact that it’s simply not possible like that. And the moment I opened myself up to collaboration my creative journey changed for the better drastically
