We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jasan Radford. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jasan below.
Jasan, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I feel very blessed with the opportunity to have had, and continue to have a career in the music industry. My mission is essentially to “give back” or “pay it forward” to the next generation of artists. So many bands and musicians may never get a chance to get noticed, so my hope is to be an additional resource for up and coming artists to have an opportunity to make it. I know how hard it was when my own professional career began in the early 2000’s. A lot has changed since, but having good people in your corner and sound advice is timeless.
After signing my first real record contract with Maverick / Warner Bros., I would be handed CD’s of Bands every night in different cities. I would end up coming home with hundreds to listen to!! It was then I thought, there has to be a way to help these artists. In 2005, I opened January Music Group with the intent to help as many bands and Artists that I could.
We had some good success, created some great careers for the artists on the company roster, but Life and the universe had different plans at the time, so JMG was closed.
While my own career continued to ride this crazy rollercoaster of a music business, I’ve always had in my mind to pick up where we left off, and go Bigger!!! So, in 2019 I created Radford Media Group (RMG), an artist for artists platform. My business partners are Brian Lacy and Dionne Kemp. RMG’s sole mission is to break the mold, and bring to light the amazing talent that is out in the world.
I felt there is more I can do, so RMG recently teamed up with Dave Politi of The Cobalt Cafe to promote and showcase up and coming young talent, along with seasoned Artists. This then led into my creation of Blueprint Music Studios (Blueprint Studios), which is based in Westlake Village, CA. We recently opened our doors and had our grand opening celebration this month with the city. Along with my business partner, Ted Wenri, who is also in the Band CENTERSHIFT, we looked to create a solution surrounding our own frustration of finding a close Rehearsal Studio. The idea took action quickly and we planted Roots in Westlake Village, an area filled with amazing upcoming and seasoned talent. Blueprint is a space for an artist to grow and develop their talents, all while bonding and networking with established artists.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I unexpectedly started my journey in the music industry at the age of 13. I actually wanted to be a Fireman before that hahaha. As I stated previously, the Universe has its own plans at times, and music was it for me. I always had the pull towards music, even when ignoring the burn so to speak…so I started playing drums!. I played over the years in various local punk bands, eventually having the need to learn Guitar.
There were so many songs in my head, but being a drummer at this time, I needed to figure this guitar thing out, so off to open mic nights I went to practice singing while playing guitar. I would also sit in the back and watch people play, and when a chord struck me, I’d remember the finger placement and run home to play that chord over and over, it’s the punk rock way. I was NOT going to take lessons!!! (lessons were probably a good idea, sorry Mom and Pops). I did this for a while until I could put the chords together and hum a melody over them….and here we are today.
In regard to Radford Media Group being an Artist Development / Management Company, problem solving is an every day, every hour duty. Being an actual artist with touring and songwriting experience I think brings comfort to our team and to the client. We’ve been there, done that, and feel good about offering our experienced guidance to our family of artists.
I’d say what I am most grateful for is the trust and amazing opportunity to grow with each and every human in the RMG Family. With Blueprint Studios, we have the ability to hear new bands daily since our RMG office is inside the office/commercial building we are at. This gives us the opportunity to present the development aspect, with the possible signing and release through our Record Label, Auspicious Recordings. We are all in this together, and we have a great all-inclusive opportunity for artists to take us up on if the relationship fits.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My band at the time, ONESIDEZERO, signed to Maverick Warner Bros Records in 2001 and was a label started by Madonna. The energy was insane, and we were off and running, the real work had begun right after inking the deal!!! We toured extensively with major Bands, we wouldn’t come home if there was another run offered.
This continued for quite awhile, and one time we were offered a huge tour opportunity, only to be brought home along with all the other artists and bands on the roster, to “make the next Record”. Unbeknown to us, our Label was actually folding and it presented a very challenging moment for the band and for us as people. We felt we had it all pulled from under us, but we knew we could carry on, and did! It took some great friendships, tough conversations and faith in one another to push forward and get creative with the next version of our career. Never give up on your dream and passion, there’s always a bigger picture!
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Ted Wenri and I met in 2003, when ONESIDEZERO took his band at the time, Bemus, on tour with us. He and I hit it off immediately, a friendship and bond was built and that grew over time. We were excited to finally join forces and create our current band, Centershift, along with Blueprint Studios most recently.
We share the same ideals for people and the arts, so partnering in multiple creative ventures was a given.
