We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jas Joya. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jas below.
Alright, Jas thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I honestly believe that in order to be successful, you have to believe in yourself enough to stand firm in the decisions that you make. Though it may seem like a cliché, staying true to who you are will ALWAYS yield you the results that you want. Either you will get the result that you want, or you will be redirected towards the way you need to go to get what you desire. Having success is beyond the flashy material things – those things will come; but instead, it is about the choices you make and how those choices prove to be favorable in your efforts.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Jas Joya, a writer, director, author, and entrepreneur with a deep passion for storytelling. My journey into the film industry began with my love for writing and progressed to a desire to write for the screen.
From journaling my ideas to writing scripts and finally taking the leap into directing, I’ve always been driven by the desire to tell raw, authentic, and impactful stories.
As the founder of JEC Productions, a film production company dedicated to redefining visual storytelling, our focus is on creating bold and unapologetic films that delve into taboo topics that highlight the diversity and complexity of the Black experience, as well as give a voice to stories often overlooked.
I specialize in crafting sensualized, dark dramas that explore themes of love, secrets, and forbidden relationships. My creative work doesn’t just entertain—it invites audiences to think, feel, and engage in meaningful conversations.
In addition to my creative endeavors, I also recently launched a YouTube channel, Jas Joya – Unscripted, where I discuss my journey as an entrepreneur while also discussing topics surrounding love, life, and relationships, and pursuing your passion – all in a raw and unscripted way.
What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and my ability to tell stories that others might shy away from. I’m not afraid to explore the darker or more complex sides of human nature while keeping the storytelling engaging and relatable. I want my audience and collaborators to feel seen, inspired, and connected through my work.
What I want people to know is that my work is more than entertainment—it’s a movement. Whether you’re a viewer, a collaborator, or a fellow creative, my goal is to inspire you, so that you may embrace your voice, and create something that truly matters. My brand is about storytelling with purpose, and I can’t wait to share more of it with the world.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is the freedom. Having the freedom to do and be allows an openness inside of you that you would otherwise have suppressed if you weren’t an artist or creative. You feel different. You move differently. The conversations are more flowy. The dreams seem possible and unrestricted. The dreams become obtainable. To me, that is the most rewarding.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I feel the main thing non-creatives struggle to understand about my journey as a creative is their struggle with fear. Fear, to me, is the assumption that you cannot succeed through what is unknown to you.
And because of that, non-creatives would usually project their own fears onto me. I’ve had this happen so many times in my life where people would project negativity on me. The beauty of it is that I haven’t or never seen the fears that they have for my life. I only can envision the life I’ve built and am continuously building for myself as a creative entrepreneur. The result is the fact that I am seeing results because of my efforts and because I am not listening to others’ opinions on my journey.
The reality is sometimes we are all afraid, but the difference between non-creatives and creatives is the push creatives have to move beyond or despite our fears.
