We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jarvisson King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jarvisson below.
Jarvisson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I believe everything I do is different from the industry. Commercially raised (grain-fed) and Grass-fed meat are both finished on grain. My animals free range on pastures for 99.9% of their lives. The meat I sell is pasture raised and pasture finished lamb, goat, & beef meaning they are consuming native vegetation for their entire life. The only time they get alfalfa is the night prior to them being processed.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started as a market garden to provide fresh produce for my local community because we are in a food desert. At the time I started Laughing Goat Gardens our nearest grocery store was an hour drive away in all directions. We had no access to fresh produce. I set out to solve this issue and I did. I also kept growing and grew into pasture raised, pasture finished beef, lamb & goat. I raised wool sheep and mohair goats that’s another avenue I am pursuing currently. Also, working on creating workshops, hands on for folks that are interested in starting a homestead or farm.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Absolutely. I was on the verge of starting a design company when my mom fell ill. I decided to come home for a couple of months at most then get back to designing but the universe was designing an entire other life for me. A couple months turned into six months and that turned into where I am now. Lol. It’s amazing though how life works and how it will bring you back to your roots to show you what you really are passionate about. Working with animals is a whole other experience that you will not yet anywhere else. Words of advice for readers, go visit a local farm or ranch and see how being around animals will effect you. See what goes into daily tasks and how they are taken care of.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I changed how I approached selling my produce and livestock. In my area live cattle is the biggest market and they are a majority of the time sold at an auction. I did the numbers and realized that if I sold my beef directly to the consumer I can get a better profit. I started advertising my beef by word of mouth. It was a difficult talk due to the fact that as I mentioned earlier my area raises a lot of beef and I was told I have my own cow that I can process. I kept going forward and turned to social media to push my product. There was a lot of educating involved because folks do not normally buy beef in bulk.
