We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jarvis Fisher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jarvis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I would have definitely started my businesses way earlier in life. I have always been involved with music, even as early as 6 years old. I started playing drums in my church which first started my love for music.. Attempting to be an entrepreneur at an early age is not quite encouraged as most people don’t understand the lifestyle. This can be very discouraging to a young adult chasing their dreams. This can make a person feel alone, or even conform to the norm. I started operations t for business in 2018. At this point in my life my family and I had freshly relocated to the metroplex. Not having a support system and having only one vehicle to help with our kids made things difficult in a major city. My schedule limited my availability for a 9-5 as a specific time and area I needed to be near. While I did find work I wasn’t happy with the pay. I started toying the idea with my family about opening a music studio, with later plans of adding clothing. Boom! It had started. If I could change anything it would be to have had more experience in marketing.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Music Producer, Clothing Designer, and Entrepreneur.. I have been involved with the local music market for over 15 years. I currently provide studio services such as but not limited to; audio recording, mixing , mastering, video editing, videography , graphic designs, photography, podcasting and custom beat making. We also design t-shirts, hoodies, and pants. Our next goal is adding a marketing team so we will be able to help Artist upload and share their music properly. What set us apart is when you come visit, you get an experience, and not just a studio session or just another number. I try to make genuine relationships with clients as well as provide them with a great services and products.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2021 My family once again decided it was time to relocate. This was back to our home town to help with family. I was honestly terrified to move back home as I was 3 years in to my new business with a growing client list, People in my city knew of me from music but from being a drummer and rap artist, but not as a producer. Once we were settled, I started to reach out to people I knew that did music. I was nervous because it have be a while since I had seen or talked to any of these artist. Luckily for me, they responded with news that I needed to hear. They had no where to record! I quickly responded to each artist that reached back. “Hit me up I have a studio.” Since that day I have now worked with hundreds of artist from 4 different states, and my client list had doubled. Moral of the story keeping grinding and with it seems like you should quit remember you almost as close to your goal.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media through instagram/facebook/snapchat. I cross-posted clips from each studio session in the stories and reels sections on these platforms. At first they were just boomerang clips. My fan based started asking for sound so I started catching artist doing their thing in the studio. Not only did I answer what the fan base wanted but it also started helping some of the artist who had smaller audiences. My advice is use that phone that you are already on and make a tool for you. Study algorithms of the platform you use. Be consistent.
