We recently connected with Jarvis Dunn Jr and have shared our conversation below.
Jarvis , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I am extremely grateful to be a successful business owner. Although, there are many unforeseen circumstances that appear in day to day business operations, I have managed to overcome my obstacles and work efficiently. I think about the “regular workforce” daily and I am glad I took a leap of faith and started my business five years ago. My motivation is being able to assist others with living a healthy lifestyle and providing alternatives that will benefit my clients in the utmost manner. My last full-time job was working in Accounting for a corporate office in downtown Dallas which was a quite memorable learning experience. I had the least amount of work experience in the entire office but I always remained optimistic and worked diligently to provide efficient results. My entrepreneurial aspirations started when I would bring lunch from home and my coworkers would ask to try food or ask when I could make them a dish for lunch or special occasion. I built a clientele at my workplace that would support me tremendously and when my demand increased I took a leap of faith and quit my job to pursue my dream of running my own catering company. Staying persistent and consistent allowed me to reach the level I am at now and my intention Is to evolve and create more opportunities for upward mobility to those like-minded entrepreneurs.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
One of the key aspects of entrepreneurship is great customer service. I believe it is a vital tool needed for the prosperity of any business looking to provide consistent and efficient results. Hard work, dedication, perseverance, strong problem solving skills, and willingness to learn are some concepts that have help me excel in life. I provide healthy products such as fresh-pressed juices that promote a variety of health benefits such as weight loss, energy replenishment, detox, immune boosting, etc etc. I enjoy making a product that helps others reach their personal health-related goals. At Ondarunmobileeatz I stand behind my products with integrity, passion, and soul. I enjoy grilling a variety of meats and providing healthy alternatives for everyone including vegan options. When you are close with your customer base and apply a “hands-on” approach I believe it creates a bond and foundation for lifelong relationships. I like to get to know my clients and understand their lifestyles so I can better assist and aid them.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I created an Instagram account when in started my business in 2017. I utilized this page to showcase the visuals and ingredients of my products. I would use a variety of hash tags and acronyms to reach larger audiences while trying to gain exposure. When you have a great product I think you should not only market strongly to appealing crowds, having a platform to showcase your product 24/7 for the consumers, and maintain a consistent inventory for consumption. I created a logo then got my business cards printed with my contact and Instagram information then distributed them to people everywhere I went such as bars, restaurants, stores, family gatherings, barbershops. Your initial base starts from family and friends and then evolves from word of mouth and point of contact. When consumers hear about a good product their first instinct is to confirm the validity of the opinion placed on the item. Next, is the consumer knowing the product is reasonable priced and readily available in a convenient setting. Stay consistent and always post and showcase your product even if it’s seem repetitive, always remember the more exposure the better.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started out selling plates at my accounting job in 2017. I would bring a daily lunch for myself and some of my coworkers would ask where I got my food and I would let them try my food and built a business from my networking. I would take orders and provide meals for a variety of co-workers, friends that were in the surrounding work area of Downtown Dallas. It eventually evolved into me catering the food for the company i worked for at our monthly gatherings for accounting department. Eventually, I would receive an overwhelming number of requests for food and my watermelon lemonade of which I resigned from my job and started Ondarunmobileeatz. I would start at a particular barbershop and work my way to a variety of barbershops and beauty salons throughout North Dallas distributing my products. At the start of my business I had only one flavor for my fresh pressed juice which was watermelon lemonade. I would go to a car wash in South Dallas and sell 16oz cups for $4 until I sold out. After getting requests for other flavors I took the time out and researched a variety of health benefits and formulated the selection of fresh-pressed juices I have available now. While my food business slowed down when COVID pandemic hit I turned a negative situation into a positive by creating a number of immune boosting, antioxidant fueled juices to keep myself and others defense system strengthened amidst the pandemic. This formula actually saved my business from folding and helped to sustain a level of longevity through adversity while the world suffered from a global pandemic and every business owner like myself was trying to figure out a master plan to prevent us from succumbing to the financial disadvantages.
