We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jarvis Coleman . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jarvis below.
Jarvis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Ten to fifteen years ago brainstorming on different business ideas with a close family member of mine. One of the ideas was a tee shirt company. We never went through on that particular idea. There was several other business ideas we spoke about but the tee business stayed with me even years later. 2017 I decided to stop procrastinating and start the company. I was inspired by several entrepreneurs I saw at different events I would attend. Felt like if they can do it so can I. Positive Black Images, wording and Pro Blackness on clothing is what i felt like was needed more.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Jarvis Coleman Founder of ASE Empowerment Wear LLC. I got into the industry with selling one tee shirt online. Later expanded to several tee shirts, hoodie’s, hats, sweatshirts, tank tops etc. What sets me apart from other brands is the straight forward unapologetic Black fashion / Black history my Clothing Brand provides. Gives the Black Community a sense of pride when they are wearing the Brand. I’m most proud of reaching the people with a positive message about who we are.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell on my website. I’m a grassroots entrepreneur as well. You can find us at HBCU Homecomings, Black History Festivals, SoulFood Festivals etc. The pros of not using outside entities to sell your Merchandise is that you get to keep all the profits. Cons are you will be doing all the leg work. Checking orders, packaging etc.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
My initial capital for my business came from my 9 to 5 job. I would later leverage my personal credit to get business cards.
