We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jarryd Dent a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jarryd, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to be a thought-provoking leader and mentor in my community. This is meaningful to me because I believe in being an additional resource, sharing my life experiences and preparing the next generation for the future.

Jarryd, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born right outside of Los Angeles in the city of Gardena, in sunny Southern California. After life as a multi-sports athlete, I continued through college, and obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Cal State Fullerton. Furthermore, I went on to get his MBA degree in marketing from the University of Redlands. During this same period of time, I pursued my passion, and began a career as a sports industry entrepreneur.
Since 2013, I’ve been in sports and marketing. I got my start by growing my own personal training brand (SteeleBodies University), and 3on3 basketball league (Score Hoops 3on3 Basketball) before launching AK3 Marketing, a sports marketing company that aids athletes and sports brands with marketing consultation.
Working in sports brings me great pride, as it provides a way to pass along my knowledge in my areas of expertise in order to help others grow. As a resource, I publish a weekly newsletter on LinkedIn titled ‘The Business of Sports’ where I share insights on branding, sports marketing, and other trends in the sports business.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When starting out on your entrepreneurial journey there will be many challenges and obstacles along the way. If you are dedicated, and really want to achieve what it is that you are setting out to do, be prepared to fail! However, use your failures a lesson to get things right the next time around instead of it being the end all be all.
There are many examples of this during my journey – I can’t just point out a specific time. Being in a service-based industry like sports, your business is dependent on having customers and clients. There were times where we may not have had enough signups to execute a sporting event, but instead of closing down shop we developed different, more creative ways to do marketing and gain exposure with our target audience and boost participation.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being consistent with what I do, whether it be coaching, marketing, or thought leadership. Always being available to share knowledge, give advice, or lead by example when it is needed.
