We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jarrod Barry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarrod, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I’m ALL about meaningful projects! That’s a big reason why I take so much time with my projects. My new album, “I Just Want To Be Happy” (out everywhere now) took me a little over 2 years to fully create. I wanted the meaning behind it to truly resonate with people. I also wanted to be completely vulnerable. That way when my fans, family and friends (or anyone for that matter) is feeling sad or down they can throw this album on and know they’re not alone! We’re in this together!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into music because I was raised by parents who would listen to all kinds of different music when I was growing up. I’d listen to Eminem, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Lil Wayne and MANY more. I remember learning songs from rock bands like AC/DC and Gun N’ Roses on electric guitar with my Dad. Singing gospel songs from the heart with my Mom. They inspired this way back when I was in 3rd grade. My brand, “Jarrod Barry” as a whole stands for “difference”. I want to be different while making a difference in this world. That’s a big goal of mine. With my double album “I Just Want To Be Happy”, we kept that in mind. My engineer and fellow artist Wyatt Erbb and I listened to the heavy hitters of todays, and yesterdays country music and thought, “how can we be tomorrow’s heavy hitter.” My brand isn’t a gimmick, it’s all of me.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, by far the most rewarding thing is when my fans come up to me after the shows, or in public and tell me how my music has helped them. That’s what it is ALL about for me. EVERYTIME I write a song I want the story to help someone else besides just myself.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started out with other genres of music. But nothing came as naturally as country music. I’ve lived on this 100+ acre farm for the past almost 15 years of my life. Worked on farms growing up. I’ve always lived in small towns. They closed the school I was going to because my graduating class had 20 kids. We had a “ride your tractor to school day” at my school. Country music comes so natural to me I never understood why I didn’t start with it. Rebellious kid I guess, hahahaha.
