We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jarian Wade a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jarian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Perseverance! It’s the one thing that separates most people who are on the path to greatness. The beauty about perseverance is that it’s not something you can teach, it’s not something you can learn, it’s something you either have or you don’t. The only reason I have been somewhat successful in my career, in business and in life is because I didn’t quit. We all are faced with adversity at some point in our lives and if you can find it in you to keep going, to keep fighting, to pull on that tiny thread in your soul and push yourself through whatever you are facing you will ultimately be successful. I Remember being unemployed with multiple college degrees and BIG ambitions. Nothing will humble you more than no income and lots of bills. The advice I always give myself is you only need one “yes”. One yes can change your entire life and every “no” you receive is one step closer to a “yes”. Perspective during adversity is going to always be a huge factor in making it to the next level. For me, I always push until I reach my desired outcome and I always move when God tells me to.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I like to think of myself as a pay equity advocate and disruptor. I work in the field of Compensation where I ultimately work to ensure that employees are compensated fairly for the work that they do. I find a lot of satisfaction in this work because your pay determines your livelihood and being able to directly influence that brings me joy. I also don’t see many minorities in this field (especially in leadership) and I feel a man immense responsibility to be a voice for the underserved if nothing else. One of the things I am most proud of is helping to diversify the space that I am in and helping employees reach their full value. I am reminded daily how many people don’t know their worth in business and corporate America. It’s my job to change that or at least shed light on it. My advice around compensation and getting paid what you deserve is to do your research and ask questions. Regarding other endeavors worth noting, My wife and I are starting a non-profit called “Ellingtons Love” to financially assist families who have experienced a child loss (Stillbirth or miscarriage). This is also something I am really proud of and I am ecstatic at the opportunity to serve families in need and provide some sense of hope for people in these situations.
Any advice for managing a team?
This is one of the more difficult things to do in this new modern way of working. We are in a complexly my remote world where employees don’t stay at companies for 20 or 30 years like they used to. I think you have to be creative but you also have to lead by example and be the change you want to see. I noticed early on that when I am irate, the team is also irate. When I am calm, the team is calm. It starts with you as the leader. The more I can increase my morale, the easier it is to boost morale on the team. You also have to stay agile and be able to pivot as quickly as possible and lastly you have to take the time to know your team. You have to be empathetic, you have to believe in the team and the mission of the company. All of these things combined, create a recipe for high morale. You just need to execute!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Repetition! I kept repeating results over and over again which ultimately gave me credibility. Once you have credibility, you just need to maintain it. The key is you must treat every person, every job, every role the same. Consistent results will always place you at the forefront. At that point, it’s about doing what’s necessary to stay there.
