We were lucky to catch up with Jared Winston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jared, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
Diving into photography and content creation had been something on my mind for about 2-3 years. I didn’t really know what I wanted it to look like or how I would do it. Evolving my photography to include content creation was not an overnight thing for me. I resisted for quite sometime because having to learn all of these new softwares, programs, and concepts just to make a quality video felt overwhelming.
I learned quickly I had to stop obsessing about how I would do everything and just focus on what I could do in the moment. I started with taking pictures I had already taken and making shortform videos with still images only. That turned into how could incorporate actual video so I started combining BTS content with the results of my photoshoots.
Over time I realized that becoming a content creator actually made me a more creative photographer because it forced me to come up with new concepts and challenge myself. Having an idea and executing on it whether it be becoming a photographer or coming up with a new idea for a shoot really just comes down to taking the big idea you have and breaking it down into smaller ideas that you can achieve.
Things don’t happen because you do them, they happen because you’ve taken one small step after another. Each step will inform the other if you have a clear end goal.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve owned a camera for close to decade now but these past few years I’ve seen a lot of personal and professional growth with my work. My mother introduced me to photography, she bought me my first Camera about 9 years ago and since then it’s been a steady progression to where I am now.
I started out only doing photography but becoming a content creator has pushed me to become fairly skilled at short form content. I specialize in portraits, personal branding and editorial photography and Im now including videography services for people who need quality video content for their brands or businesses. Ultimately, each client I have has their own specific needs and I make sure that they get as much value as possible from our sessions.
For my content creation, I want to close the skill gap for people who may be a beginner or intermediate photographer. A lot my journey as a photographer involved hunting down answers to my questions. As you go through your own photography journey you can get a lot of conflicting information from other photographers so I try to make my content easy to understand. Ultimately I want to be a resource for people wherever they are in their photography journey.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to build a community of people who want to continue to grow in their photography journey. I don’t want it to just be me teaching others, I want people to know when they see my content that they can learn something from me and ask questions that others may be able to answer. There are so many ways to get the same or similar results in photography and it’s all about what works best for you and the equipment you have.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to share the things I create. Whether one person or a thousand people like what I share I just enjoy being able to share it. There’s something about bringing an idea to life with photography and seeing how it evolves overtime to the final iteration that’s unique.
It’s true for both the entertainment and educational content I create. No matter how much I post, each piece of content is it’s own journey and has inevitably changed throughout the process in a way you can’t always predict.
