We recently connected with Jared Chance Taylor and have shared our conversation below.
Jared, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As a teenager, I learned so much from spending hours alone creating music just for fun. That changed later on. As music became a career, I began to learn a lot from collaborating with others. Creative dialogue is one thing, but there is so much to glean from simply watching others do their thing. If I could go back, I’d lean into collaboration even more and celebrate bringing others into the process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I write music for film & TV. I partner with directors, editors, content creators, ad agencies, and other musicians to bring stories to life. For me, music & stories are a fantastic combination–I love writing music and I love stories. This really clicked for me in college and I’ve been enjoying it ever since.
More often than not, music in film is doing its job best when the music itself goes unnoticed but the story is seamlessly elevated. There are exceptions to this, for sure, but you catch my drift. Music has this beautiful way of gluing a film together–providing context, hi-lighting the significant, and connecting dots for the viewer. This is what I seek to accomplish with each client I take on.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A few years back, I started to approach music as a product rather than an art. It put me in an unhealthy headspace. I had been keeping busy with jobs, but as time passed, I was gradually losing all margin to enjoy I was doing. It came from an honest sense of feeling the need to “keep up” doing music full-time. I thought I had to work frantically to work successfully. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
A string of failed jobs jolted me into reevaluating that mindset. It took so much patience, but I was eventually able to slow down, trust the process, and enjoy music again. I’m very thankful for that season of life.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Have you ever been inside a cathedral? There’s something about their architecture that forces you to gaze upward with wonder. I share the same goal. I want to write music that compels people to look up.
