We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jared Beary a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jared thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Well, let’s start with the name of my business. It is Deer Creek Drones LLC. Now a little story to break it down for you. I am a full-time employee at my job. I have a full-time farm and I live in a very remote area in the state of Kansas. That being said, I am an avid hunter/outdoorsman. And so one of my passions is deer hunting, and so the first part of my business name came to be Deer. Like I said before I live in a very remote area of the Flint Hills of Kansas and I live on a creek named clarks Creek. I have a half mile long driveway with an iron bridge on it so that is how the middle part of my business name came to be, Creek. And then, for the last part Drones, I fly drones for the state of Kansas, and I branched off and made my own business with my own personal drones. So that is the method that I used to come up with my business name.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
This all started about four years ago. I started with a hobby drone at home, and I ended up doing a video for myself, but turned it into the state of Kansas, which is where I work full-time, they then asked if they could use it on their social media I said yes and then, about a week later I was asked if I wanted to fly drones for the state of Kansas, I of course, accepted that. I then move forward with getting all my licensing that I needed to fly drones commercially you have to have your FAA, part 107 to fly drones commercially. Once I completed all those tests and I was a certified drone pilot a saw what they did with my video on social media and thought that would be a pretty cool business venture. So with my small drone I move forward with coming up with a business name and making Facebook page and tried to get some business in Ariel photography for taking photos of Homesteads. They used to take Ariel photos with airplanes but now with the invention of drones, it’s much more affordable., at first, I did not get a lot of business. I had one or two jobs, and they turned out OK I basically was learning how to be a photographer with no schooling and watching photography videos and reading. Then I learned that most photographers, edit their photos and videos and so I had to purchase and learn how to edit my photos with online software. That is a continuing art. As I had a few jobs under my belt, and I was getting a little more comfortable with my abilities, I decided to move up and purchase a larger drone that took better photos and videos, and also moved into making videos for trade of services. I learned that I could do the things that I love to do in the outdoors or things that I wanted to do in the outdoors with my family by trading my drone services for outdoor activities. As this venture progressed, I learned how to make and produce videos, and as time passed, got better with the video editing software. I have now graduated to doing promo videos for businesses for their social media sites as well as photography for them also. One of the hardest things that I have found in my own business and with this small niche hobby is advertising and trying to get my name out there. I’ve just relied on social media and friends, sharing my stuff on their pages. On the other businesses I’ve done work for on their pages, tagging me and things, and kind of just word-of-mouth. I have also done work for an organization called outdoor mentors in Kansas and they strive to get young kids in the outdoors so it’s not a lost art. I really enjoy working with that group of people and being able to bring different perspective for everybody in the outdoors. That also lines up with what I love to do in my personal life so it’s easy for me to relate with those people. I would love to expand my business to bigger companies and possibly partnering with big companies to travel and do work for National Geographic or other big television shows that need maybe not my business name but my skills as a drone pilot and photographer. I am on about every platform of social media that there is with Facebook Instagram, TikTok. I’m hoping that that is just helping me get my name and my skills out into the world for people to see. I really do enjoy flying my drones and creating amazing photos for people to see from a different perspective. Not everybody gets to see things from the air.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
As of today, my best source of clients is and has been word-of-mouth, and with some of the functions that I attend for the outdoors, they get to see me fly the drones they get to see the finish product when it is posted on their social media sites and I am tagged in them. When anybody sees a drone they always stop and look up and watch it and think it’s so cool so sometimes just being somewhere flying will get peoples attention also
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building my audience on social media has been quite difficult Actually. I really have to have a lot of content to capture somebody’s attention, something unique, something that they’ve never seen and most of the drone, photos and videos th
at I make nobody really gets to see that.
