Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaquez Robinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaquez, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I discovered my passion for storytelling in eighth grade when I participated in my first play, “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” That experience ignited a love for the craft, leading me to realize I wanted to pursue it as a career. By my sophomore year of high school, I visited the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), where I saw professionals in the industry doing what I aspired to do. Witnessing their talent and the opportunities AMDA offered young artists solidified my determination to follow this path. Additionally, seeing my first Broadway show, “Les Misérables,” inspired me even further. In my junior year, I attended the Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA), where I thrived in an environment filled with fellow passionate students. Each day challenged me to grow as an artist, and performing in shows like “Sweet Charity” and “Little Shop of Horrors” helped hone my skills in preparation for what AMDA had in store for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey has been a gradual build-up. After graduating from AMDA, I faced setbacks due to COVID-19 and feared I might never enter the industry. However, joining a weekly Zoom group reignited my passion, this group is called “Station House” which is a group of actors all around come together to read original script they all wrote and potentially put them into film. I even started my own script reading group, where fellow artists and I would gather each week to read scripts from plays, movies, TV shows, and musicals. These sessions motivated me to return to LA, where I quickly secured a job and joined an incredible acting studio.
Joining AGB Studios was pivotal; the teachers there helped me refine my skills, preparing me for auditions and ensuring I delivered outstanding self-tapes. Being part of the studio opened doors for callbacks and connections with industry professionals.
Currently, I’m filming “Sadie Le Mime,” where I play Matt, the main character’s best friend. I landed this role through “Broadway Rave,” a monthly musical theater dance party where actors and fans come together to celebrate their love for the art form. There, I met the director of “Sadie Le Mime,” and the rest is history.
Attending these events and being on stage continually fuels my passion for performance, allowing me to explore my capabilities. I want others to know that success takes time and patience; with passion, hard work, and a supportive community, nothing can stand in your way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an actor is seeing the hard work I put into my craft come to life for everyone to enjoy. I particularly love exploring characters with dark and twisted qualities—traits that are the complete opposite of my own. I thrive on the challenge of playing roles from different time periods, each with a profound connection to various aspects of humanity. It’s incredible to know that, as actors, whether on film or television, our performances leave a lasting impression on the audience. I aspire to continue telling stories not just for the audience but also for myself, allowing me to delve deeper into the complexities of humanity through every emotion, mental struggle, and journey.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The project I’m most passionate about is my screenplay, “Crimson Kin,” which I’m working to develop into a web series. I always wanted to explore the darks parts of human mind and my projects explores on family dynamics, abuse, and horror. I am always inspired by films that show no boundaries to what they film and go above and beyond of what is being shown. This has been my passion project for the past 3 years and I am more passionate than ever to bring this to life. Every hour of every day, I’m focused on refining the screenplay to make it even more engaging. My ultimate goal is to transition to acting full-time, whether in television, film, theater, or sitcoms, so that each morning I can wake up ready to tell another incredible story of another interesting characters.
