Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to JaQuay Copeland . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
JaQuay , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The brand’s mission was developed when I realized I could use home decor to directly and indirectly impact the lives of others. People love to commune in beautiful spaces, and I believe good hospitality includes creating an environment that’s not only livable but also beautifully enjoyable.
That’s why each Dio Salva pillow is intentionally designed as a statement piece to catalyze conversation.
Dio Salva’s mission is to help create beautiful environments that lead design enthusiasts to feel connected with themselves and with others.
Whether design enthusiasts are communing with others, or simply home alone, Dio Salva pillows can assist with improving their social, mental, and/or emotional well-being.
JaQuay , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Home decor has always been an integral part of my creative expression. Early on, I believed new decorative pieces could enhance anyone’s overall space and ultimately liven up anyone’s mood.
By the Spring of 2013, I decided to take a leap of faith by leaving VCU’s Interior Design program to pursue an alternate career path. For seven years after my departure, I accumulated knowledge and hands-on experience working within different facets of the design industry. My design experience, partnered with my entrepreneurial mindset, led me to take another leap of faith by launching Dio Salva (which means God saves) in the Spring of 2022.
Dio Salva is a high-end decorative pillow company that bridges Contemporary, Modern, and Glam elements together to form a style ideally suited for those who prefer bold yet refined decor.
Through a combination of eye-catching colors, textures, patterns, and embellishments, Dio Salva pillow designs offer consumers a fresh approach to a decorative staple.
Though the company is still in its infancy, I am proud of the foundational values it’s been founded on, especially helping those in need. No man is better than another, and we serve as such. We put the welfare of those in need at the forefront. Our goal is to help when we can, and in turn, inspire others to pay it forward.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve had to unlearn trying to fit in or be accepted by everyone. From my personality to my journey as a whole, I’ve often wanted to feel “normal”. At this stage in my life, I love who I’m becoming. My process hasn’t been pretty, but it’s been the prerequisite for what God has in store, and I’m excited. As I’ve matured spiritually, I’ve learned who God says I am through His word, which gives me the confidence to show up as my authentic self wherever I am.
When I began building the brand, I quickly realized I didn’t want it to be a typical company.
I felt led to build it to be rooted in philanthropy, servant leadership, and evangelism.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are so many to name, but the books that have caused a paradigm shift for me have been Simon Sinek’s, “Start with Why”, David L. Steward’s, “Leadership by the Good Book”, and Mike Michalowicz’s, “Profit First”.
NPR’s “How I Built This” and Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings’ “Earn Your Leisure” podcasts have also significantly impacted my management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy.
