Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to JaPrentis Sheridan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
JaPrentis , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’m hoping that when the time comes and my journey here on earth is done that people will say how hard working I was . I hope that people will say how impeccable my resilience is . They would describe me as someone who goes after what she wants & puts pride in doing the things she loved to do . They would say that God & my family are the reasons for my success . I’m hoping that one day my grandkids hear stories of how determined , motivated & blessed I was . I would want them to use what they would be told about who I was to motivate and mold them into being more successful than I plan to be while I’m here on earth .

JaPrentis , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is JaPrentis Sheridan . I am a 30 year old wife & mother of 4 kids . I started braiding at a very young age . It wasn’t until age 14 when I started practicing braids on other people . I would braid my family and friends hair and I currently still do . I attended Nash community college and obtained the skills and techniques to become a natural hair care specialist . I received my natural hair care license in 2015 . I’ve had a love for hair since I was 7 years old . Being a hair specialist has its challenges . Everything isn’t all peaches and cream in the hair industry . We have to provide the best service possible while creating a beautiful style for each client . It takes a lot of skill , determination & knowledge in the hair world . You have to know what works best for each of the clients that you service . I try to make sure that I discuss the wants and needs of my clients so that we can be on the same page . For me my clients turn into family . We laugh & cry together . It’s really like I’m a therapist to them as well . Believe it or not some of my clients become my therapist during their appointments . I feel as though it’s bigger than just hair for me it’s about servicing .. providing a service that God has given me a gift to provide to other people .

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
On this creative journey I have been motivated by knowing that two of my daughters want to follow in my footsteps . So I have to make sure that I get the full experience in this industry so that I can teach my daughters the ins and out so that they will make the best decisions possible . The goal is for me to open a braiding salon that I can pass down to my daughters and they can pass it to theirs when the time comes .

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Braiding hair started off as just something I did for fun but then folks began to tell me how good I was at it . I elevated to getting paid to braid hair & I think that put a battery in my back because it’s been all about hair for me since . I have worked at a couple of jobs on my journey but I would always go back to braiding . I am currently a full time Braider & im so thankful for it .
