We recently connected with Jannine Krause and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jannine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
When I started my practice in 2007 I was hung up on making my office and practice function much like the doctor’s offices that I was used to seeing the conventional medical space because I thought I’d be considered odd to have a non-traditional doctor’s office. I spent almost 15 years trying to fit an integrative medical practice into the conventional medicine model of practice. I burnt myself out, trashed my health, pushed myself to the brink of a mental breakdown and wanted to quit when I realized what I was looking for all along was a practice that was fun, relaxing and I enjoyed going to each day. When I opened my thought process up to the practice I had dreamed of and let go of what I thought a doctor’s office had to be like I renewed by zest for my practice and started enjoying being a doctor again. I no longer have an official office, I offer my services in person in Washington, Montana and Wisconsin where I am licensed quarterly rotating locations and in between provide telehealth services. I also added a coaching program world wide where I teach women of any age how to be their own best doctors and defy aging by creating new and crushing current athletic and adventure goals. Knowing what I know now I’d invite anyone who’s getting started as a doctor to follow what feels good to them when it comes to their practice and do not let anyone or what you see as the “normal” office sway you from your perfect practice. If you get into practice and start to lose joy for what you’re doing, take a step back and evaluate what aspects of your practice don’t feel good and what you could do to get things feeling good again. You’re in control mold your practice into what allows you to be the best version of yourself for your clients.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I decided I wanted to be a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist when I was 15 years old as I was impressed by al the tools they had to help patients feel better. At the time my Mom was using acupuncture and naturopathic medicine as adjunct therapies to her chemo and radiation. Even at a young age I was drawn to watching people walk into the acupuncture office drained and come out full of life and happy. It’s something that to this day I can’t get enough of when I do acupuncture treatments. As a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist I help athletic men and women defy aging and stay active in their sport or hobby. What sets me apart from others is that I train my clients to utilize the tools to optimize their health vs succumb to the effects of aging. From daily East Asian bodywork techniques, EFT tapping, acupressure with essential oils, body tempering, conditioning training, herbs, peptides or bioidentical hormones – we identify the combination of tools that work best for each client and create an individualized protocol that helps clients meet their athletic or adventure goals. From qualifying for Boston to being ready for a last minute 1/2 marathon or a cross country bike trek to learning to downhill ski or trying out your first Spartan race at any age, if you have the desire then a guide like myself can get you there. I’m most proud when I see clients achieve a goal or learn something new that inspires them to keep optimizing their health. Watching a client transform into being their own best health guru is my greatest joy. You are in charge of how you age, you don’t have to give up or compromise when it comes to your goals, there are always options to improve your health. The more you know about yourself the better you can identify the habits, routines, and behaviors you want to adopt to keep optimizing your health. Having a guide to help you become your own best health guru speeds up the process exponentially and I love supporting men and women ready to defy aging!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I built my reputation by making solid connections with referral partners in my community. I went out and got to know how they treated clients and brought them into my office for complimentary visits and put them through my programs. I maintain relationships with all my referral partners to keep my services fresh in their mind and them referring to me. In terms of building my reputation with clients, I took time to follow up with them and check in on a regular schedule, made notes about their families, hobbies and preferences during treatments and asked them questions about these things while making sure to support their preferences in visits. I truly believe the better you listen and get to know your clients the better you’ll be able to serve them and get solid results.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the concept that I had no control over how my days went and how my life played out. For so many years my business ran me vs me running the business. I honestly didn’t feel like I was the owner of the business. When I realized that I was in control of my own reality as well as my emotions and how everything was playing out was a reflection of my perceived lack of control it changed everything for me. When I took control vs let things happen around me I realized I could have the practice of my dreams. It now seems wild to me that I owned a business for so many years but didn’t feel in control of it. Gaining control of my business and emotions changed everything for me as a business owner.
