We were lucky to catch up with Jannine Jack recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jannine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I always knew I wanted to start my own catering or baking business since I was in middle school, so I started brainstorming names then. I wanted the name of my business to display my background and who I am, so the name came very naturally to me and did not take me long to come up with as I utilized my multicultural background to create it. I stuck with it ever since and do not ever plan on rebranding or changing it because I think it is such a clever way to combine my African American and Hispanic background into the name of my company.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I initially started to bake cakes and decorate them for fun when I was an undergrad student, but then family and friends started to pump my head up and encouraged me to start selling my cakes. I was a bit reluctant at first because I knew it would be difficult to work a full-time job, go to school, and run a business, but then I realized the extra money could help me pay for school, so I went for it in 2017 and to this day, it not only helps me to pay for my tuition as a doctoral candidate, but also supports my everyday life as well and for that I am truly grateful. I would have to say that I am most proud of my hustle (I definitely acquired this quality from both of my parents). My parents are the hardest working people I know and it only drives me to go harder in everything that I do.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think resilience is something that any business owner needs to possess because running a business is no small feat. Many people probably assume that baking is easy. Mix eggs, flour, sugar, and butter together and it is done, However, so much more goes into one cake. Personally, I will never send out a cake that I would not like myself. I am very much a perfectionist when it comes to the cakes I make, so if something is not working out to my standards, I will keep working on that part of the cake until it is. At the same time, I still have to make time for my school, work, and personal life while running the business. It gets really tough sometimes, and the many sleepless nights make it easy to want to quit, but I have learned over the years it is all about keeping a positive mindset and that is what keeps me bouncing back when I am feeling overwhelmed with juggling everything.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of clients for my business has definitely been word of mouth and Instagram. I have had many new clients inquire about cakes and desserts that were referred by a family member and/or friend. I also get a lot of new clients from parties and gatherings that they attended in which one of my cakes and/or desserts was ordered for.
