We were lucky to catch up with Janna Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Janna, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have been in Mental Health for over two decades studying different modalities like cognitive therapy hypnotherapy lots of classes tapping you name it I was determined to cure my complex PTSD from childhood trauma. Then the pandemic happened and it gave me the courage to want to educate people about mental health and I thought I wanted to do it through Comedy, so I went to an open mic signed up on the list and Comedy 10 weeks in a row. Then I realized I don’t want to be a comedian, but I would love to host an open mic show. I now host a very successful open mic show going into our fourth year.

Janna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a childhood abuse survivor here to inspire others to take care of themselves and take chances! I’m also here to be a resource for anyone that may be struggling. I run a very successful Mental Health open mic at Sundown at Granada every Monday night. I also host at the Dallas farmers market every first Sunday. The love mic is an amazing community where hundreds of people feel supported and are able to practice their craft in a very safe environment.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After being at the same venue for two years, the show grew so big that they canceled the show. Luckily I named the show The love mic so I was able to actually move it elsewhere. But they canceled us the same day we had a show. This was December of 2023 where me and my Cohost took a break to find another place. At that time my Cohost in my opinion wasn’t taking it as serious as I was and we broke up. We have since sort of rekindled the relationship, but I had to move on without her. That was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Going and signing up at an open mic was truly just inspired people about mental health through Comedy. The pandemic happened and prior to that I thought I was the only one that came from Trauma after the pandemic I feel like we all now have some sort of trauma, so I wanted to be a part of the solution. So I thought since my life was a joke growing up, I could be a comedian, but I did not want to gauge how many times you thought I was funny in one minute.
