Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janna Marmon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents did a lot of things right, but one thing in particular that they did REALLY right, was inspire me. My parents are 2 of the hardest working people that I know, but it’s not because they are workaholics. It’s because they are driven by passion and enthusiasm. Even as retirees, they wake up every single morning with a can-do attitude and are ready to tackle the day. Not only are they go-getters, but they also think about life & making money in a less conventional way. Neither of them stuck to a 9-5 job from age 22-65. They owned & sold multiple businesses. They fixed & flipped houses. They rented real estate. They taught me that you don’t have to stick to one job or even one career field for your entire life. If you look at each day as a new opportunity, you’ll never run out of things to be excited about.
Janna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The name of my business is Ramblin’ Jan. I came up with that name because I’m constantly bouncing from creative endeavor to another.
The majority of my days are spent running my design business. My focus is in branding & packaging design within the food & beverage industry, however, I do branch out and work with brands in different categories from time to time. I work one-on-one with clients to either build their brand from the ground up or to reposition their existing brand and give it a fresh, new face-lift.
When I’m not designing, you can find me teaching group fitness classes! I am a certified REB3L fitness instructor. REB3L is a 2-part fitness platform that combines dancing & strength training. I started teaching classes 6 months ago and I am loving every second of it!
When I’m not designing or dancing, I’m usually on the farmette, either welcoming Airbnb guests to the property, working in the garden, or planning a community event on the property. My husband and I renovated the apartment above our garage and have been renting it out on Airbnb for 3 years. We love hosting people from all over the world! We also recently coordinated and hosted our first ever artisan market on the farmette. We had 15 local vendors, 2 food trucks and a bluegrass band at the Spring Fling! Our plan is to host these types of events twice a year.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love being a creative because creativity can be applied in so many different ways. I was formally trained in graphic design but my skills have translated to lots of different mediums throughout my life. I find that my creativity comes through in my cooking, my dancing, my decorating, etc. It even comes through in my outlook on life. Because I’m a creative thinker, I haven’t always followed the straight & narrow path. My path has been a bit windy, but that’s what keeps life interesting!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals, referrals, referrals! I am still shocked that I’ve been running my design business for over 3 years and I haven’t had to do much outreach or marketing. I built a few solid relationships at the start of my business and those connections led to more connections which just continued to snowball. Maintaining relationships is super important!
