We recently connected with Janki Patel and have shared our conversation below.
Janki , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk about keeping costs under control when growing. How have you managed to keep costs from getting out of control?
My business partner, Brittany, and I do not have any debt on the business. We started out by being resourceful and creative in where we allocated our funds. We shopped around a lot on Facebook Marketplace and found therapy clinics that were going out of business that would sell us their equipment for a bargain; the equipment always still had so much life left in it! We used a lot of supplies that we had accrued personally from years of providing private therapy and then used funds to buy supplies that were necessary to buy new. Once we began making a profit, we would continue to allocate funds to buying only the best supplies (whether new or used!).
Janki , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Jump Ahead Pediatrics provides occupational therapy and speech therapy to children of all ages within our 2 clinics. We also provide therapy within school districts and within private homes as well. My business partner and I are both pediatric occupational therapists who have worked in a variety of environments in a couple different states. We decided to open Jump Ahead Pediatrics after realizing that there were attributes that we loved about facilities that we had worked in and things we did not like. We brought all of that together in order to provide more independence and flexibility to our lives but also to provide affordable, effective and fun services to children of all ages throughout NJ.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I went to college with my business partner, Brittany. We met in our first occupational therapy class during our Freshman year. We just ‘clicked’ from the beginning and began studying / hanging out together. As the years went on, we grew closer in college. After we graduated, we worked in some of the same jobs and continued to remain in touch / hang out. After graduation we also spoke about one day opening up our own practice and as the years continued to go on, we eventually ‘ripped off the bandaid’ and made it happen!
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
Brittany and I began cold calling businesses in the area in hopes of making a connection and receiving referrals. We were surprised to receive a call back from a pediatrician saying that she wanted to meet with us and discuss our business. We were beyond nervous and overthought our outfits and our conversation. We must have made a decent impression because we received some referrals from her. We periodically laugh about how nervous we were with such a ‘small’ meeting considering the very important, stressful, and larger meetings we have been a part of since then. It was a great learning experience and a great memory to see how far we have come.
