Janine Hernandez, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I got started in my business when I finally decided to publish my first book. But to be honest with you I had no idea what I was doing. I had other authors reaching out to me asking if I would coach them and I tried the best that I could but I had no real structure or sense of how to grow business. I spent the next 3 years perfecting my craft and learning from other trainings and coaches. Right before the pandemic I was coaching up to 12 people at one time and as you know that can be exhausting. so I decided to start group coaching. I made an outline of a course I could teach that would teach authors how to publish and I created a workbook. I started promoting my coaching program on fb before I even had it done. I enrolled 15k worth of new clients and hadn’t even recorded one video. Over the next two weeks I recorded, and launched my program. Since then we have now have over 75 videos teaching you how to publish your books, and over 70 authors enrolled.
Janine Hernandez, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’d like to share a bit of my story with you.
In April 2015, I started my very first book publishing coaching program. I focused on helping authors write, publish and launch their books. I had always wanted to publish my very own books and I made so many mistakes when I first got started. I am sure you can relate…
I didn’t know the publishing process.
I didn’t know how to sell myself online.
I didn’t know how to get people to my events.
I also did not know how to market myself to the news stations and radio.
So, to me it was important to share what I had learned and make sure that aspiring authors didn’t make the same mistakes I did.
The coaching part was easy however, I quickly learned that I did not have the bandwidth to support as many authors as I wanted to from a one to one perspective. I was still working for Corporate America and I knew that something had to change.
So, I made the conscious decision to walk away from my 9-5 and I transitioned to an online group coaching program. I spent the later part of 2019 and early 2020 creating my online courses and structuring my program. I invested in multiple coaches to help me launch my new program. While the world was enjoying tiktoks and virtual happy hours during a pandemic, I dedicated every single day to the curriculum of this program.
Finally, August 2020, The Book Publishing Academy was born. We have enrolled over 75 authors, Amazon’s Best Sellers, Multiple features on Good Morning Arizona, CBS, NBC, FOX, Telemundo and Univision.
We are in a season of growth and offering our authors a growing community, lifetime access to our program and publishing support.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I decided to invest in airbnbs so our authors could write their books over a weekend getaway. I had a business partner that was investing with me and during the process and down to the signing day, my business partner came with no money to invest. I had to front everything myself. This was unexpected and I had to pivot from our original plan. Thankfully I had all the funds to fund this project myself and was able to part ways with this business partner.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn my money mindset and create a new one. We only know what we know. So I had to retrain myself, learn new behaviors, and believe in myself. I did this by attending webinars, seminars, speaking events, reading books, listening to audios, and hiring a financial coach to help me organize my finances and also see what was possible for me.
