Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Janine Booth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Janine, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents were amazing role models for me growing up. My Mum Irene, was a dedicated Wife and Mother to me and my two sisters and showed us how to love and care for family to the fullest capacity. She was always there for me and continues to support my hopes, dreams and guides me through my own journey as a Mother. On the other side was my amazing entrepreneurially Dad, John. He started out in HR at in a car manufacturer in Northern Ireland before starting his first News agency business with my Mum, followed my other various businesses such as a hair salon and burger restaurant before moving to Australia where I was born. From there he started a very successful video store chain, an ice cream store franchise which he built up to 70+ stores and various other businesses which he built up and sold. Together my Mum and Dad made a great team and I learned so much from them as to what hard work looks like and what it takes to be successful. To build something from nothing, whether is be businesses or a family or in my case both.

Janine, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an Aussie born Chef, Restaurateur and Creative Director for my restaurants and my lifestyle brand Sunny Side Up. I currently have 10 restaurants spanning across Florida (Miami and Orlando), Puerto Rico and Indianapolis, Indiana that I have built with my Chef Partner and Husband Jeff Mcinnis. I started taking cooking classes in middle and high school and it was always my favorite subject. After leaving school I worked ins spas as an aesthetician before backpacking through Europe and Asia for 7 months and loved immersing myself in the culture and trying all of the amazing different cuisines. I decided to take my culinary education to another level and move to Miami and enroll in culinary school. I staged (volunteered) in many restaurants at the same time and learned as much as I possibly could. I worked my way up through many restaurants and eventually competed on To Chef. In 2014 I opened my first restaurant Root & Bone, NYC and it was open for 8 solid years. It was extremely successful right out of the gates and it taught me so much about what it takes to build and run a successful restaurant. I worked my butt off for 2 solid years to build the business and it was an amazing and eye opening experience and incredible to be immersed in the hustle and bustle of the culinary scene of New York. From there, the obsession with building restaurant concepts and showing my creativity through menu and recipe creation, restaurant design and brand development began. Eventually I expanded my horizons to include my love for beauty and natural / eco friendly ingredients and created Sunny Side Up.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When life gives you lemons; you’ve got to try to make lemonade! Through Covid I was pregnant with my third daughter Daisy. Our restaurants were closed and our future was unknown. It was a scary time for all and being stuck at home with no work and my mind going crazy I took something that I had always provided as an amenity in our restaurant; home made hand scrubs made from sea salt, coconut or olive oil, citrus and essential oils and started Sunny Side Up Lifestyle… an eco friendly beauty and lifestyle brand that uses natural ingredients for glowing skin. I taught myself how to built my own website, source supplies in the middle of a pandemic, make and brand different products and sell them through my e-commerce website. It was a totally different direction than restaurants but it kept my mind focused and help support my family through a really tough few years.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my business partner (and husband) while eating at one of his restaurants back in 2011. We worked together on an off for a few years and built and amazing friendship and working relationship, which eventually turned into a romance. Since then we have built 12 restaurants together, had 3 children and are learning on a daily basis how to keep that work life balance as business partners and husband and wife.
