We recently connected with Janine Bolon and have shared our conversation below.
Janine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
The Calendar Chronicles and Time Management Magic
Let me spin you a yarn about my wild ride through the world of entrepreneurship. I started my journey bagging groceries for a quarter and carrying them to old ladies cars. I then learned the value of offering services that solved people’s problems and that is where my trusty calendar became the unlikeliest of bosses, guiding me through the twists and turns of business ownership like a seasoned captain navigating stormy seas. My dad was in the Navy so I have a lot of metaphors with oceans, ships and navigation (just to warn you now.)
Picture this: I’ve danced with success and tripped over failure more times than I can count, but through it all, my calendar has been my steadfast companion, whispering sweet nothings of productivity and efficiency into my ear.
From the tender age of 10, I’ve been hustling and bustling, juggling business ventures like a circus performer with flaming batons. And let me tell you, I’ve seen my fair share of crashes and burns. But those failures? They’ve been my greatest teachers, schooling me in the art of what not to do with my time, my money, and my precious brainpower.
Now, when folks ask me, “Who’s the boss?” I flash them a grin as wide as the Grand Canyon and proudly declare, “Why, it’s my calendar, of course!” You should see the looks on their faces – pure shock and awe. Basically, they just don’t get it. You see, being self-employed ain’t no walk in the park. It takes grit, gumption, and a whole lot of scheduling savvy. That’s where my trusty calendar comes in. It’s not just a tool; it’s my North Star, guiding me through the murky waters of business ownership with the grace of a swan and the tenacity of a bulldog. Yep, my calendar keeps me reined in!
Now, let’s talk turkey – or should I say, critical success factors? Every week, without fail, my calendar lays down the law with four non-negotiable appointments: prospecting, follow-up, closing/getting folks started, and training. It’s like having a mini CEO whispering sweet reminders in my ear, keeping me on track and laser-focused on the prize. Sure, there are days when I’d rather kick back with a cup of joe and binge-watch my favorite Netflix series. But my calendar won’t hear of it. It’s like having a no-nonsense boss peering over my shoulder, cracking the whip and reminding me that success ain’t gonna chase itself.
So, here’s to my trusty calendar – the unsung hero of my entrepreneurial journey. With its guidance, I’ve built multi-media empires (self proclaimed!), weathered storms, and come out on top time and time again. So, the next time you’re feeling lost in the chaos of business ownership, just remember: your calendar ain’t just a tool; it’s your ticket to blazing your trail to success. Cheers to that!

Janine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story with your readers. My name is Janine Bolon, and I am a seasoned entrepreneur, author, educator, and podcast host with a passion for helping others achieve their dreams while living a balanced and fulfilling life. My journey into the world of entrepreneurship began at a young age, driven by a curiosity to understand how things work and a desire to make a positive impact in the world.
After spending 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry, I made the bold decision to leave corporate America behind and homeschool my four children while pursuing my entrepreneurial endeavors. Throughout my career, I’ve worn many hats and embraced various roles, from analytical biochemist to homeschooling parent to published author and podcast host. These diverse experiences have shaped my approach to business and life, instilling in me a deep understanding of the importance of time management, financial literacy, and personal growth.
Today, I am the proud owner of The8Gates, LLC, a platform that encompasses four podcast programs, a radio show, 95 online coaching classes, and the publication of 17 books.
My mission with The8Gates is to empower individuals to live their best lives by providing them with practical tools, resources, and guidance to navigate the complexities of modern life successfully.
One of the primary problems I solve for my clients is the challenge of balancing entrepreneurship with other aspects of life, such as family, relationships, and personal well-being. Through my books, courses, and podcasts, I offer strategies for managing time effectively, building financial stability, and nurturing personal growth while pursuing professional goals.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my holistic approach to success, which emphasizes the importance of integrating business success with personal fulfillment and spiritual growth. I believe that true abundance encompasses not only financial wealth but also emotional well-being, meaningful relationships, and a sense of purpose. I am most proud of the impact I’ve had on the lives of my clients and readers, helping them break free from the constraints of a traditional mindset and embrace a more holistic approach to success. Whether it’s through my books, podcasts, or coaching programs, I strive to empower others to step into their greatness and create the life they desire.
I am committed to people’s success and well-being. My work is driven by a genuine desire to help others thrive in all areas of life, and I invite anyone seeking guidance, inspiration, and practical wisdom to join me on our quest for a well-lived life.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Ah, thank you for asking! You know, fostering strong relationships with my clients has always been a top priority for me. It’s something that I’ve valued since I was a young entrepreneur, sending out thank-you cards at the age of 10 and spending up to 6 hours every Friday writing out hand written notes was common during my early years as a business woman. Now, with the tools and technology available, I’ve been able to take that personal touch to the next level. I’m a firm believer in the power of genuine connection, and for me, that means staying in touch with my clients on a regular basis.
One of the ways I do this is through Send Out Cards, a fantastic online system that allows me to send personalized cards and messages to my clients with just a few clicks and at the same times, I’m able to put pictures of them, myself and our shared activities into the cards. Cards are not just for birthdays. I send them year round anytime I meet online with a buddy or I meeting someone for the first time. I invest about $215 a month into this system because I truly believe in the value of follow-up and relationship building. Whether it’s sending a birthday card, a thank-you note, or just a friendly check-in, these small gestures go a long way in fostering brand loyalty and strengthening the connection between myself and my clients.
In addition to Send Out Cards, I also utilize personalized gifts. But at the end of the day, it’s all about showing my clients that I care about them as individuals and that I’m here to support them in any way I can.
By staying consistent with my communication efforts and always putting the needs of my clients first, I’ve been able to build lasting relationships that extend far beyond business transactions. And to me, that’s what it’s all about. I want my clients and readers to realize how much I care about them and that I don’t want our communications to always be transactional.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
The first business I ever started, I worked a part-time job until I had enough money to purchase a franchise.
